Tried out MWO either late in open beta or shortly after launch, I ca't properly remebr which honestly. Due to the poor interent I had at the time though I just didn't enjoy the game and I was not enjoying how much of a grind it was to earn C-Bills. I've decided to give MWO another go after getting a Battleteh itch I can't seem to scratch. Plusa little bird told me that the Clans are in now and I have a lot of fond memories of the Thor and Loki from Xbox's old Mechwarrior.

Any advice for a newbie who hasn't been in the cockpit for a couple of years and is looking for a good mech to learn on? The hunchback seemed relatively cheap and I always had fun using it.

The usual recommendation is a Stormcrow, almost anything from 35-75 tons is workable though. I'll assume you're more interested in clan mechs.

I suggest you steer clear of the Summoner (Thor) early on. It's hardpoints don't suit the current balance.

The Hellbringer (Loki) on the other hand would be a pretty good first mech. It isn't a timberwolf, but it gets ECM, which is a pretty big deal. HBR-PRIME Is a pretty standard build, you can use missiles or a ballistic if you like. Play with the mechlab, find something that looks good.

the Hunchback it probably the best starter Mech for now although that could change in the near future when PGI makes significant changes to game balence, unfortunately we so not know when or what form those changes will take.

Some people recommend the Stromcrow but that is one of the best Mechs in the game and thus a high priority target for the enemy team. It is likely to teach you bad habits as it can get away with things few other Mechs can, it will be hard to break those habits later.

the Hunchback is cheep, each variant is good at something different most variants have most of there firepower in a vulnerable hunch so you will learn defensive twisting to cover the hunch pretty quickly, any Mech will benefit from that skill later
the variants are
4G, AC20 specialist, 4H AC10 specialist, 4P Medium Laser specialist, 4L LRM10 specialist and 4SP SRM6 Specialist, and if you are willing to spend real money you can get the Grid Iron a Gauss Rifle specialist, or get the Mastery Pack containing the Grid Iron, 4P and 4SP, as well as 30 days premium time and some cockpit items.
you will need to upgrade the Hunchbacks to get the best out of them, that is an extra 2-4 million each, you will want Endo Steel internals to free up more weight and double heat sinks to make it run cooler (about 2 million for Endo and DHS), after that you will have space for a larger engine, I would recommend a Standard 250 (1.5 million) which you can swap between all the Hunchbacks, then use any extra space/weight for extra heatsinks or ammo

Verstaka, yes the Clan Invasion is here. Please do not reference Mech Assault for Xbox, that was not a real Battletech game, more of a blasphemy. GLGH.

I know it's supposedly heresy, but I've been running an XL 275 on all of my Hunchbacks, and so far have not noticed a difference in survival time between when I was running a STD 250 and that. Plus, it gives me more speed and firepower. Yes, people target the hunch, but it's not that hard to protect it, and the high mount gauss rifle (-4G) and 3xLLs (-4P) are really nice for hill/corner peeking. The -4J practically needs an XL to really get the firepower and mobility it needs (2x LRM 10s, 4x MLs - was 5, but I wanted another DHS).

If you did not invest real money into the game, and you dont have a load of C-bill mechs, You may want to create a new account for the novice rewards ( first 25 matches get you more money to help you getting started with own mechs )

Also play the Academy missions. They will get you some money for completing piloting and coordination (singleplayer !!! )challanges.

Clan mechs are initialy costlier than IS-Mechs but require less money to upgrade.

Also stay clear of the Summoner ( Thor ) it has one of the few flaws next to no balancing will ever cure. Not enough podspace and annemic hardpoints. Hellbringer ( Loki ) is fine. One of the best Mechs in Game.

So wellcome back to MWO

It's dangerous to go alone.

Take this. http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/

The above site will let you test build option on the Thor, so as to decide for your own whether or not you could still love that mech in this game. Just, you know, try out the hunchbacks or Loki's first to get an idea of what such load outs would mean. Be your own advisor.

Best time to jump right in as the Clan Summoner known as Thor for the Inner Sphere and is available for CBills, as well is the Hellbringer known as the Loki inside the periphery.

For clan players the choices are getting better and better.

The Hellbringer AKA Loki can pack quite the punch for a 66 tonner, here is my favorite build,

And her is my favorite setup for the Summoner AKA Thor,

have fun :)

Is MWO incompatible with windows 10? I ask because I'm playing on the exact same PC that I was using 3 years back but as soon as I log in my computer screeches in protest and restarts itself. I'm in the process of unique and reinstalling right now to see if that might fix the issue

its very compatible with windows 10. I run it fine on mine.. in fact, windows 10 uses less system resources then 7! make sure you update your video card drivers... I used to run this game fine on a GTX460, so whatever you have should be fine if its only 3 years old

there might be something else going on with your pc... just a hunch..

Working IT support I have frequently had to tell people how to roll back to Windows 7 because in about 3/4 cases that I have seen something does not work after the upgrade, usualy it is a driver issue but there have been several programs which do not like Windows 10 for some reason.

Assuming the problem is driver based
Go to device manager (right click computer then select properties, a window opens and device manager will be one of the options) and check to see if there are any question marks or exclamation marks, if there then right click the item and "update driver software", if the driver updates great, if not visit the manufacturers website and find the relevent driver (assuming it exists)
If you cannot find a driver, ether wait for a new one to be created, or rool back to Windows 7

Well I'm not sure if it's a thank you for playing durng open beta or if there's a passive 'allowance' every week of Credits but somehow I have just under 15 million compared to the 350 thousand from 3 years back. Think I'll hold off on an assault meh for now until I figure out just what I should do with this.

Welcome back, no allowance, but there have been a few c-bill "giveaways" and the cadet bonus for the first 25? matches, maybe you qualified for them? Check under achievements, it lists all of the cadet matches that you have finished

Welcome back to MWO.

There is a repair tool for MWO that you might try running. I had a problem the first time I fired the game up and the repair tool fixed WHATEVER gagged my computer.

Number of anniversary giveaways have transpired. There's also the first 25 match cadet bonus. You can also get even more by going into the tutorial and completing tasks there.

You may even find a few mechs you didn't have. I believe they use the "L" or "Loyalty" distinction. So coined for being loyal to the MWO game as a thank you from the developers.
