I only played this once, but looking at this video it looks like MWLL has a lot of advantages over MWO. Any MWLL servers that still have populations?
Would definitely be a blast to run tanks, elementals and aerotech fighters!

See here for server info and install info:
http://stats.spikx.net/mwll.html
Earlier there were 15 people on a server, which is half capacity.
Even 1 VS 1 can be a good match; the Solaris game mode is fun shooty stompy robots.
I'd argue the smaller numbers are more fun than the high population; but there are scheduled events for full pop servers.

They stopped development and some other people wanted it to keep going but what stops someone making a mod of a mod? I think the answer is Microsoft but hey someone had to ask. Yeah it could be fun with more people though it feels like a war when that happens.

I had a go at MWLL for the first time today and had a blast. Had 4 other players at the highest point, but everyone was helpful and it was a lot of fun. Will definitely be checking server lists to see if there is a drop on.

MWLL is fantastic, no ghost heat, combined arms, long TTK, huge maps( most are 8-10 km across) , no attack lanes, active and passive radar, capture points that actually make sense as well as provide assets to the team, respawns, no Jesus box ECM... It is basically everything MWO was supposed to be.iit's a battlefield not a closed arena, unless you actually choose the Solaris servers.
Controls take a bit getting used to since the mechs retain inertia, water actually slows you down (like it is supposed to ) and jump jets work very different. it's not a twitch shooter, it's more like a MW3 simulator.
The server population is on at odd times for US players since the majority of the player base is oceanic or European. but feel free to drop into a test of strength server so you can try out all the mech and vehicle variants without having to earn them.
The game play is fantastic but be aware it is using cryengine 2 so it may look a bit dated to MWO players.

Microsoft had nothing to do with it, the main 5 guys who worked on it formed a fan studio with a free license from Microsoft. however at least one of the guys also worked for crytech as his day job, to prevent friction with PGI and his employer he voluntarily stopped updating(even though there is a bunch of assets that are still ready to add to the game), no need to threaten his job afterall.

but, but, but!!! [insert conspiracy theory here] OR [insert blame PGI/Russ made up cease and desist letter here].

Oh there was a cease and desist letter, however it was not binding as Microsoft retains the rights and can give them to whoever they like. the free licensing for a fan made mod is not a F2P money making endeavor. it was also issued in 2009 well before PGI started MWO.
The MWO twitchy comp players won't like it because long cycle times on big weapons+tactics+diverse loadouts>pinpoint high alpha builds in MWLL. so there really isn't any competition there.

MWLL would be perfect if it had PGI's art if the 2 games were Merged somehow that would be a darn near perfect MechWarrior game, but the Mech lab would have to stay locked like in MW LL or it would blast its self to META DEATH like all of the predecessors did.
