Either way, it is kinda silly but as long as you are not doing it repeatedly and non stop (multiple times a session without even trying to play) i dont think they will say a word.

Serial AFKers are a problem, but reporting them is usually too much effort.
If you're just going AFK once a session, you'll be fine. If you go AFK every game for several games in a row, people will notice and report you.

As it should be. If there's a strong possibility you will need to AFK, you shouldn't drop.
Paul (or Russ? Twitter I think) mentioned that going AFK every now and again won't result in a ban - it's serial offenders that have to watch out, and for a start, the bans will be small anyway.

Did he define "serial".
If the OP has to afk two games a night to take care of his kid....
How many days until suddenly he's a griefer?Do they look at how many games you played that session vs. how many you went afk...
Hell, how do they even check you were afk? What the OP goes afk at the start but comes back and plays halfway through? Is he suddenly banned?
I for one, think they need to set some clear guidlines rather than leaving it up to be applied on some mods whim....or some random report spammers word.

If it helps any you'll have people complaining about it quietly to PGI (who will look at your record and the game info to then go 'nahh, that's like one sudden AFK out of 50 games, who cares? probably had to answer the door or something'), rather than loudly and annoyingly and repetitively in the game or forums.
Remember: The very last thing PGI ever want to do is sanction a player in any way, because doing so will cost them money.

Your freedom ends when you press Play Now/Ready.
At that point you are committing to 15m of gameplay. However, action on your account for AFK ONLY happens of it is excessive and repeated. If it is not excessive and/or repeated, there is nothing to worry about as the CoC is very clear.

But if its a problem to the point that you do earn a serial tag, then yeah, its probably needs to be looked at it regards to fairness to other players.
This game is already prone to absolute collapses as soon as the first mech or two on your team dies. An AFK from the start rarely helps. While I understand your position, some of us also have limited time, and would prefer not to be handicapped from the get go in the few matches we do get to drop.

Sorry, but everyone else wants to play, too, and don't want to have their game ruined by your life.
If there's a danger that you'll have to go AFK, you shouldn't drop. Period.

Right. And since it's just a game, you won't mind at all being penalized appropriately for breaking the Code of Conduct.
By all means, tend to your screaming toddler. As long as that's a rare case, you won't be penalized. We understand; life comes first.
But if it's happening regularly, you really need to re-think your life choices because you're playing games at a time that it seems like you really should be attending to your family.

Obviously you have no kids or don't know how that works anymore.
I have two little ones here, all is fine and I only play when they are asleep. But once in a while one of them starts crying without any "warning"; bad dream or whatnot.
And if you let them scream to get that one alpha off, the second one will wake up and then you have trouble with 3 women. Trust me.
This is still a game and if anyone thinks he have to report me because I need to see after my kids/wife/dog/pizza/whatever so be it.
The thing is, it is a difference if you just go afk in a match or you deliberately go to the edge of the map, shut down and stop chatting alltogether only to preserve some epeen stats.
Our community is (thankfully) old enough to know that real life is a thing and we all have our reasons to do what we have to. Ok, most of them. So don't worry grimbane.

this is a team game; what would happen in the world cup if clint dempsey decided he had better stuff to do at home and ran off the field?
grow up.
if you cannot play a team game as a part of a team then don't play. tend to your baby and play farmville
