Here is how i did it and how i recommend to all my recruits

First play all the trials for at least 3 or 4 matches each
If you know that you want to go clan or is then you can focus on your desired faction only
But i encourage to at least experience both sides (know your enemy)

After running all the trials you should have a pretty good idea of what weight class you found most appealing
Now its time to pick your first chassis
If you have no idea, a simple what looks coolest works well most the time
However before any purchase always inpect the mech in the mech lab (view in mechlab button when looking at a unit in the store)
Here you can see what items it comes with but most importantly what kind of hardpoints it has
If you enjoyed missiles on the trial mechs you probably want some on your first mech
Aim for what you had fun with

Before you click buy there is one last thing i recommend
Look at what weapon hardpoints of each variant from your chosen mech
What you ideally want to see is different options on each of them
A hunchback is a great example
The main stay hunchi is the 4G , it epitomizes the nature of a hunchi
Good armour, big punch in a small but slow package
However on closer inspection you will see that all the hunchbacks are very different

This is good because you will have alot of variety when leveling them up and you will learn and grow alot as a pilot by expanding your experience
You may even be surprised by what ends up being your favorite

It is absolutely the best to buy 3 variants of the same mech when starting out
After you have gotten all three to full elite rank, you will know what build or variant you like the best
Keep it and level it to master rank and sell the other two
Then repeat the process

Now it is inevitable that you will fill all your mech bays
But do not despair you do not need to spend any real money

Mechbays are given away quite frequently and can be acquired with some effort in game
Ok so how do you get them ?
Easiest way is to keep an eye out for events (now that news is presented in game this will be easy)
Events often have great prizes attached to them
These take many forms but can include mechbays and sometimes full mechs with a mechbay attached
Events are a fantastic way to boost your account just by playing

The other way is to achieve ranks in cw (rank 3 or 4 i think)
Jump into cw join a faction on a temp contract, after you earn your mechbay let the contract expire and repeat until you have the desired bays or you have them all
Now CW is very rough and wild at the moment, so if you find it to brutal wait for the next cw update that will include 4man missions and things will likely get easier, that said dont shy away from cw, use the lfg tool and faction chat to help things along
If you get dropped with a bigger grp and have a good time ask them to tag along

Last bit of advice NEVER sell equipment
As your mech collection grows having spare weapons, engines and gear laying around will make lab time easy on the bank
If you must sell, never sell below 10 , always keep a stockpile

Thats about it, enjoy

Interesting thing about the Clan vs IS trial mechs, though. The IS trial mechs are actually pretty good, for the most part, except for the fact that you have no skills with them. The Clan trial mechs are...variable. Some, such as the Mad Dog, aren't terrible (light on ammo, but otherwise all right), while others, like the Dire Wolf, are nearly unusable.

Thinking about getting a Clan Mech too (after several IS mechs), but I am not sure which one to buy and not to infest tooooo much cbills. So was thinking about the Light/medium Clan's, so which one is a really good and fun to play Clan mech which does not cost like >12m?

The Arctic Cheetah is a great Clan Light Mech, one of the best Light Mechs, it is reasonably fast (140 with speed tweek, about 127 without), can take ECM and can carry upto 7 weapons

Other good choices include the Shadow Cat, a jumping Medium, designes to carry a Gauss backed by 2 Medium lasers, however it has limited hardpoints unless you like machine guns (it can carry lots of those backed by 2 lasers) it can only carry 4 weapons max

Then there is the Nova, a slow (for the clans) Medium with jumpjets, it is designed to carry a lot of lasers, if you buy the Nova prime what ever you do do not fire all 12 at once or you will overheat and may die from overheating before powering back up, although firing 6, then half a second later the other 6 only takes you to about 70%

The Stormcrow is12-13 million each but is probably the second best Mech in the game, with good speed, realy good hitboxes, and excellent potential firepower. I would not recommend the Stormcrow until you have played a few other Mechs because it does not realy teach you any useful skills like many other Mechs will.
