I don't think it's a big deal. Yes, the tryhards will run minimal graphics so they don't have to deal with as much smoke, or any of the particle effects, or other environmentals clouding their view. Yes, they will see me 100m further away than I see them. Yes, they will shoot through stuff at me from a cloak of invisibility that I cannot look through.
But my game is actually pretty and nice to look at. My game is fun and interesting, because I have to consider how I want to deal with the smokey caldera - risk peeking over? Edge around the sulfur geyser to get a better look but exposing myself for longer? My game is displayed in all its glory on a 9 foot wall 6 feet away from me, with loud noises and bright flashes that really do blind me and drown out other noises like TS when I get hit with autocannons. And I like it that way. All the super-comp players can use their low-spec tweaks to run the equivalent of wireframe actionbots to get their minor advantages. I don't care. It's sad, boring, and not worth it.
Of all the games in the world, if I ever try to make a name for myself in MWO, then I've lost my mind. Please send me to the psych ward. Hell, if I ever try to make a name for myself in any video game...
I'd rather keep my games fun than waste countless hours in vain attempts at fulfillment through a video game.
