Considering the fact that my WLR is the lowest in hot maps such change might not be a bad thing.
Except it is a bad thing, which will further enhance the laser meta.

Maps that will probably be eliminated quickly:
Terra Therma (heat, Mt. Derp and the PuG Zapper)
Frozen City Day (visibility)
Alpine Peaks (size and Snipper Peak) yes the spelling error is deliberate
Viridian Bog (visibility and tanglefoots)
Greatly reduced
Caustic Valley (heat, NASCAR and night cycle)
Mining Collective (bad for assaults and non jumpy mechs)
Forest Colony (night cycle)
River City (night cycle)
Tourmaline Desert (heat)
So get ready to be bored and see a LOT of the same maps till you change because you're sick to death of Frozen City Night, Canyon Network, Crimson Straits and HPG Manifold.

Get ready for it. Also, get ready for PGI to be so flooded with reports on 'hiding' and 'shutting down' for supposed nonparticipation they're going to make a "suck it up" section of the forums for all the complaints about it because they would lose too much of their player base otherwise.

Isn't that what they've always done? Why break a trend, right?
Neg. Not all the time. They do mistakes. But also learn from it, the saw the quirckes created more problem than it solved and try to diminish the effect of the quircks. They saw mechs ahd bugs with hitbox, they are trying to make map better suited for the game. And all of that is nice.
Only idiots never change there idea. PGI change it a lot. And that is something good.
We can say that: At least they try stuff. Quiaff?

Yes, and most people will stop playing in the group queue at all because they'll always be outvoted by the big groups.

But don't you understand there will be no big groups, Sean Lang is pushing for 4 man largest group by the sounds of the live chat, and Russ is to dumb to tell him to shut the hell up.
I have over 8000 hours of premium time and I'm not sure its worth keeping the game on my PC to use them up, October has been a Black month for this game

Map rotation should be random, but players should manage to choose the mech after the map.
Now the lrm trolls will choose Alpine, the Laser try-hard will choose Frozen city-night, and so on.
So even if the choice will be from 4 maps, the match will be soooo freaking unbalance!!!

Lol.
Anyway, I'm for trying the vote system out. I ACTUALLY have all game modes selected anyway, so this is really no skin off my back. I just don't want people to throe a fit and disconnect if their game mode isn't picked :/

Where you can vote, it will only weight the RNG is your favour but not a guarantee outcome.
Or is this a different implementation?

Depending on how things pan out, I could see them dropping the map vote and keeping just a game mode vote instead with the maps going back to random.
Hard to say until we try it.

Mode choice - if it would be players affecting the dice roll, not defining it, then yes, sure. We could finally get more game modes then. Also, I would love to see the assault mode with turrets back, next to the current turretless one (I like them both and they are quite different in terms of gameplay).
---
I'm also against selecting mechs after seeing the map. Yeah, it makes sense, only it will end up in laserspam in cold maps and gaussspam in hot maps, brawlers only in clustered maps and snipers only in open maps. In addition it's gonna be a new thing to disadvantage the newbies who don't have mechs optimised for all maps. And choices like whether to use the mech you actually want to play and be disadvantaged vs tryhards, or take the one optimised one you don't actually want to play now for the map you got now to not get disadvantaged. Leave such things for CW.

That is my fear as well. At least with objectives it does give options and forces teams to move around.
Still disappointed about hearing PSR is "working as intended"...

Did you read or here the Town Hall dude? Pick your Mech, hit GO. 4 Random Maps and 2 Modes pop up, pick from that random list, MM uses numbers to create and the game starts as usual. Not rocket science... for most anyways.
P.S. This opens the ability to ADD new modes, otherwise new Modes are just a waste as they only break up the Community in more buckets.
