No. It would be better to just make the blue triangles/doritos flash red when taking damage.

First, the entire map is never visible on the minimap.
Second, no one would actively scan the minimap for distressed doritos. Maybe if there were a tone or something to draw your attention down...

the phrase "mayday button" is not the full encompassing term that PGI would likely implement,
why make a key that you can use only once or twice to catch the attention of your allies?
there are many more strategic options when the key is expanded to a menu of quick commands, also incentivizing the battle commander and lance commander with information controls.
instead of just having a key for the dude that got abandoned, we could have a key letting that guy know people are falling back, or pushing forward, much more useful, since that guy KNOWS he will be alone, he knows he could be caught unsupported, and should move into a position to better defend himself, or the even better idea would be to stay with your group or lance, knowing ahead of time where they plan on moving, and how.

A keystroke menu is not the same thing. That requires you to hit a key to pull up a list of commands, and then hit the appropriate command. The attention this would require wouldn't be much less than hitting "T" and then pressing "hlp e5" (or wherever you are).
If you want multiple command shortcuts, then just make them something we can bind to a key and we can move it all around as best to suit us. One key is a mayday and coords, one key is attack my target and coords, one key is company falling back, one key is company advance, etc. The original idea is an emergency key...one key stroke to notify the company. If it becomes more complicated than that, the original idea is lost.

Thats what comm's are for. Additionally I see such a function being spammed by new or inexperienced players. Every so often in PUG drops there is someone who goes against the flow and gets themselves in trouble. They are too far from the main group for anyone to arrive in time to help. I don't want to be spammed by such people with mayday calls.

Here's what I do when I'm in trouble like that (from scouting or try to split enemy focus, or just a stupid move) Throw up a UAV so the team can throw some LRM's my way. Even if I don't survive it may make the different later in the fight.

Anyway, the real answer here is comm's. Either in game VOIP or TeamSpeak. I know some folks will complain they don't like comm's or unable to use comm's for w/e reason. When I PUG drop I really don't use Comm's unless I have to, often not at all. Thats a choice and I understand doing so effects in-game performance for myself and the whole team. Id rather not see more features with discourages people from using Comm's....its a co-operative game and SHOULD be played with comm's. Not doing so is a handicap you just deal with.

We should be encouraging people to use comms....

RE: Its often the slow guy who is left behind not the rambo.
Running a 40kph KCrab is a choice....and punishable by not being able to keep up with your lance. A mech which cannot keep up with the rest of the team is a bad build IMO.

Sure, so long as it has some kind of cool-down. At least a few seconds, so it just cant be spammed. Other than that? Sure. More communication = less death. 100% proven.

how fast can you press F1?
press it twice for a target call or what have you, (keys still need to be defined) it's still simple and quick, but offers more in the long run.
how long should the cooldown be? that's a bigger question.

Perhaps a one-use MayDay call is a good idea, but to avoid overspam, it may be used only when you have taken "Critical Damage", IE when the alarm Klaxons are already in your ears... It will pop yellow smoke and alert surviving Lance and Company commanders only.
