Well I am not a good player, i even drop solo in CW and ... well I loose 90% :( but I have fun with that game!

From my games maybe (only) one of three qualifies for the tournament ... i dont play my best mechs extra for that, I juut play that I need to get XP and then my veteran units...

BUT HELL YA I GOT A TBR-C (Champion) yesterday, that feels like X-Mas!

Correction, they changed requirements to 150 score matchpoint instead 250 ... now 9 of 10 games qualify for me :)

I dunno, didn't see quite a change. Some nights I get ripped, some nights I win most of the times. I don't think it has to do particularly with events.

It's like some times you play every possible maps back to back, others you play 4 times in a row Viridian Bog. Randomness can be a pain sometimes but no use trying to find a reason for it.

Also, MWO is a game largely based on your team, not your individual skills. You'll get great synergy at times, others complete chaos. I often find myself doing 450 dmg in a game while most of the team can't pull more than 200. If only a fourth of your teamates don't pull their weight, you might get steam rolled.

And finally, there's the mood factor. You can't always be your best match after match: sometimes you're not in a mood that fits the playstyle you are desperately trying to achieve. Try different tactics, use different mechs until you have fun. Often I find I myself trying to play an assault, but I after a while, a faster paced light mech seems to be more in sync with my mood.
o7 and have fun.

True, you can't always be at your sharpest or in the mood for playing every style.

But I do have to agree with some others - a goal to work for can make you concentrate better. My only fully upgraded lights are Kit Foxes and they're not even meta builds but can do good when I stick to my role instead of trying something silly. Help my big guys by irritating their targets from the back/side, take cover if someone looks sternly in my direction. Add fire to that assault mech desperately trying to catch our speeding ACH. Aim carefully - a well-placed shot is worth more than a hasty sweep the instant a target turns up. And ofc, don't let them have a shot at you unless it's worth it. A King Crab throwing AC slugs in my general direction is not good, but if he's ignoring the Nova closing in on his back...

Thats just how this game is. Not for the feint of heart. Broken? Yeah...few arguments otherwise across most of the playerbase.

But, the comp players come out to get their candy as well and with such a small player base this is gonna happen.

Best thing to do is learn from it. Seriously. Notice how the good players move together and force themselves on the opposition and how bad players sit and wait in one spot.
Also teaches the value of moving and twisting for defense.
Also communicate, if your team is sitting and waiting or making bad trades at a bottleneck feel free to encourage a flank or something.

My first year of MWO was really bad sub-200 damage games in commando. You just have to ride out the bad until you get gud...unless you are one of those naturals.

I am by no means consider myself even a mediocre player yet, but I used to think I was steadily improving. My match scores were finally breaking 300 semi-semi-regularly, and I even got 4 kills in one match while getting my latest Firestarter to basic.

Then last night happened...

All of a sudden I can barely get a single solid hit, and every game a join was either a crushing defeat or was completely carried by my teammates (though watching them play after I died was really instructive).

I believe the reason for this is the Trick-or-Treat event. Obviously everyone is pulling out their best builds for the event (notice how the percentage of light mechs went back down to pre "ACH for c-bills" level), but more importantly (I think), everyone who normally plays in the highly competitive group queue is suddenly joining the PUG queue looking for easy pickings.

...The end effect was downright brutal.

----

One thing to take away from this is that if I am correct, then the tier system is truly completely broken, and the only reason it worksat all in it's current form is because the good players all spend most of their time in the group queue when they are really trying hard to win. This in turn means that any plan to merge the two queues (e.g. by allowing a max of one 4-man group on each side) really requires having a non-broken tier system in place or the influx of all the better players will just crush the newbies.

Like the title says, it was a depressing evening.

Tried again last night and things were much better. I'm not sure if the reduction in the requirements for the rewards meant the better players weren't trying as hard, or if the new armor comfiguration (only 2 in the back) is so much better, but I ended up having an average match score of 222 for the night, with 20% of my matches getting over 300. Managed to elite my firestarter too, so hopefully things will get even better in the future.

I know what you mean, but the tier system isn't broken, and it's not that "the competitive crowd" isn't properly seeded - the problem is players' reactions to the event that are causing your pain. Whenever an event like this comes out, players tend to play much more... "cautiously." They peek and hide, and your team on the minimap will often look like a flock of frightened sheep trying to all hide behind the same hillside. It's not a good way to play - players are too timid as a rule anyway - and it tends to result in bad matches. Whether you realize it or not, you have an instinctive expectation of what your teammates will do - and the event scrambles that sixth sense badly. It's true that people will play more meta builds and such - my Shadowhawk isn't really meta, but I did stop skilling up my Cicadas in response to the event. They'll also play more LRM boats to farm damage - and therefor score.

Keep trying, and adjust your builds and playstyle to meet the distorted playing environment created by the event, and you should do fine.

PS: the game is not "broken," though there is a much-needed re-balancing in the works. This isn't because the game isn't fairly balanced right now, but because the current balancing scheme (quirks v. Clan weapons v. Omnimech flexibility v. Omnimech allocation restrictions) isn't sustainable and is creating some extreme unintended results.

What? No no no. The way to do point based events is to get in a vicious brawler and charge inna the fray, get your points and get out. When events like this happen you see less cautious gameplay, not more.

I must say for me the shift from 250 to 150 requirement has really made a big difference. I can now play my regular fun mechs and get my prizes (never had this many flamers in my life...) about 9 times out of 10. It's really turned into a fun MWO weekend, so if you're reading, thanks PGI for that.

I think others are also taking our their regular rides -- I just had two Trebuchets in my team, and then in the next game two Highlanders. I don't think anyone would accuse those of being the über-meta.

Well, I thought it was just me getting offed @ 100% health to dead in 2 seconds, by multiple lances that coordinate their fire.
And entire teams are doing it, feels kinda like stumbling into a clan war as a pubber and being "allowed"to stay (as fodder).
It's ok though, Im not allergic to fighting harder...it's go time.

The weird thing is it's taking 5+ minutes to find matches during these overly-busy times, to the extent that I took a video of the whirling search circle. This includes taking lights or assaults when the % is below 20. How is this possible?

The simple fact is PGI, while saying we need more diversity in mechs, strategies and builds has made it so the only way to get xp, cbills and match score is through damage. GG PGI not understanding it's own game as usual. If you want a good laugh watch them fail at MRBC.
