In all honesty, I very much hate platforms like steam, however both steam and origin get extra hatred for me, origins hatred is due to me feeling that EA in general is a blight on the gaming industry. (not trying to offend anyone, this is merely my opinion, which i state only for explanation purposes)

As for steam, Its a bit tougher to explain, and quite frankly anyone who doesn't share my train of thought may find it a bit silly. Simply put I fear steam is growing too powerful and may well monopolize the gaming industry, In essence, I fear Steam becoming the way I perceive EA, but about 10 times worse. Don't get me wrong, I like steams concept and they certainly aren't like this as of now, I just feel they are coming into too much power for a single entity to hold without things going bad.

As stated above, I am not trying to offend anybody, these are merely my opinions and I'm not forcing anyone to think as I do, I am simply stating how I feel, If this angers you, I apologize.

I'll completely agree on EA. Because of their tactics the current "management" has completely soured me on BF3. (This is a tune I have already played several times).

AS for STEAM, I like the platform. I don't see it as something MWO will need initially, but as another pointed out it may be something that will happen down the road in order to re-invigorate subscibers. I

I also have wondered about STEAMS huge success becoming a problem, but so far the product ( Friends list, game joining with friends, store, library, etc.) has proven to be the best out there.

You have at least a well thought out and at least somewhat rational fear and reason to not want to use it. Just so we are clear, EA is a blight on the gaming industry, no opinion there lol. I agree with your fear with Steam, though the biggest plus they have going for them is they are a privately owned company and Gabe has stated before he wont be selling it. As it stands, if it wasn't for Steam, PC gaming would be in a lot worse shape then it is right now, whether you like Steam or not, that much is true. Valve has also not gotten lazy either being in the #1 position all this time as they are continuing to improve and expand the service. There aren't many options out there but out of the ones that are Steam is probably the best. We (PC gamers) also have to except the fact (oh and I hate this one) that we have to deal with some form of DRM in one way or another, outside of older stuff and some exceptions DRM is a fact of life for a PC gamer now.

I like Steam well enough, I use it near daily, but I want MW:O as far away from it as possible. Steam is for indies and FPSs. Steam + MMO = Awkward, every time. Steam + MW, I'd rather not find out.

theres 20 odd MMOs already on steam it cant be that akward

MechWarrior Online on Steam...not sure is like or not.

Anyways, if you think that Origin is better than Steam, check this out...

Oh wait...wrong video.

THIS is the one.

From what i've found, COMPLETELY TRUE! (and Origin is spyware...EA can access your hard drive whenever they want and you can't do anything about it. it's in the EULA...)

I don't really care, so long as I don't HAVE to log onto steam. I know you can find LotRO, DDO and STO on Steam, but playing these games, I've always done it directly through the original login program.

Guild Wars and City of Heroes are both available via Steam, and both still support non-Steam options.

As long as it is optional, I don't understand why some of you are vehemently against Mechwarrior Online being on Steam (or even Origin). More exposure means more players and more profit for Piranha, which increases the likelihood of A] More MWO content, B] An eventual Single-Player Mechwarrior game based on the engine *knocks on wood*.

Steam has been picking up a lot of F2P games lately, and I personally think MWO would make a great addition.

Well for whole "MWO into Steam? Is it too expensive for Piranha?" -debacle this upcoming feature will be best way to solve it. They can go and post stuff about MWO into this system, put up voting with certain minimum amount of votes in order to be profitable and go! One problem in this voting would be overlap from people that vote for "Yes" while already playing and paying through stand alone client. Still I think that it would be extremely good way for Piranha to map how profitable it would be to go to the Steam.

Also even if MWO would hit Steam I think Piranha should keep stand alone client because not everyone is willing to use Steam for reasons of theirs own. This is what Hi-Rez has done with Tribes, they have stand alone client and client for Steam and you just choose which one to use. Easy and simple, no one is harmed by forcing use of Steam.

Is it then extremely costly for Piranha to go into the Steam? Hard to say, but as F2P game it has bigger risks than it would have if it was Pay to Play game. We can throw around any numbers we like, but we don't know real and accurate numbers so kinda no point. What we can safely assume is that Steam is giving developers way bigger cut then retailers would ever do.

I love Steam! Seeing MWO on steam would be cool, but there'd be a huge influx of terrible players who would think this is tf2 with robots.

Suddenly, I don't want MWO to be on Steam anymore. Didn't think of the drawback.
Oh dear god-emperor, I can see the people playing scout mechs complaining about the lack of double-jump already...

This community will get childish and complaining players. Naive to think that only Steam could cause it to this community. Every community, with or without Steam, has players that only complain.

Not another Steam thread for people to go back on forth, it's almost as bad as the UrbanMech debate... but I have to admit, seeing stuff this awesome really makes me wonder what Steam haters have going through their head, unless they're just blind. There are seriously people who think Valve is the devil, and Steam is hell itself, and I really have no idea where you can get that misconception. Valve does all these things to integrate the player, as if developers, publishers and customers are all equal and should work together. Steam workshop has been amazing at having players put their own content in game, and if it goes strong, it may be the one thing that knocks down costly DLC in the future. Everything they do is for the customers, because they enjoy what they do, not making money.

Valve is in the business of making money.

If you should ever have a dispute with the company, you will better understand how Valve treats its customer base.

All Companies are there to make money, we may not agree to like how they do it, but they will always look to the final total to see what they can get out of it.

Tell me something I don't know. I was playing along with Manthony's post for fun. It's just a matter of time until the game gets flooded by less than reasonable players. Free to play and mechs are attractive to a lot of people.
Putting it on Steam would just bring it to the attention of people a lot quicker. I like Steam. Use it a lot.
Some of the people on there give me the creeps.

I say let it go on Steam.

There is a potential % of a 30 million userbase that can start playing MWO which is a GOOD thing. A percentage of those WILL spend money on the game which will go to improving the game even more.

Besides, just because it goes on Steam as Free To Play game does not mean that it will be a forced Steam login.
