LOL.
It's not that assaults are useless, they can in fact be very useful. The greater issue is that in general PUG gameplay everyone hides behind the assault. Once the enemy sees the assault crest it gets focused on and brought down before the friendlies enter the fight. When done properly, the more agile `mechs enter the fight first in a group to draw fire, the assault crests and takes down the enemy.

Then you're terrible with light mechs.
Good vs Good.... lights always win.
Nah, I can kill light pilots who I'm fairly certain are better than me. Sure they often get me, esp if they get to shoot first, but it's not as bad as you make it sound unless that light pilot has a lag shield as there are certain pilots who damage seems to pass through and others that soak it up properly and pop like corn in a preheated pan.

I hardly ever do less than 500 damage in an assault. I usually use a warhawk B or a Stalker 3M. Occasionally, I use a Dire wolf if I want easy mode.

I am not sure what PGI is doing, but in previous MechWarrior games the Assaults were real powerhouses, but suffered from movement penalties so bad any medium could easily out-circle their turn rates. Much much more than in MWO where the assault mechs move like ballerinas by comparison. But the movement penalties were only ok because those assaults were truly murderous to smaller mechs, much more than in MWO.
MWO can't support 2xGauss or even single Gauss Rifles without the 'pansy' mech pilot's heads exploding let alone 2xUAC20's fired in pairs which is required if assaults get heavy movement penalties. The MWO crowd has no stomach for that kind of damage level and MWO's mechs are too weak. I mean if you had an assault in MW3 or MW4 you would not put UAC5's on it. That would be laughable. Good, bad, who knows? But MWO has super-Lights, junky Mediums, balanced Heavies and nerfed Assaults so balance is all over the place, but they can all compete together.
Currently Assaults are pretty good. Play it like the lighter mechs are your bow wave and follow them in. Use the Shadow Cats as bullet catchers because for some reason opponents would rather go for the easy kill.
