Steam should hopefully bring in a whole load of new players into MWO. I've seen some negative comments about the influx of noobs. However, I say we need to welcome them in and help them as much as possible. Every player we bring in and keep extends the life of the game and helps to fund future developments.

I'm planning to do lots of solo pugging and trying to herd the crowd in the general direction of the enemy.

We need the players. Don't be afraid of change people, bring on the Steam launch!

More players = more money = more staff at PGI = random chance that they accidentally hire someone brilliant! :P

Speak for yourself, I was Tier 1 and fully mastered in everything at drop one ;-p

Seriously though: they'll be fine. Most of them won't come to the forums and will pick things up from game chat as the average player is quite pleasant, the ones that do will head to the help sections which are just crammed full of helpful people, and the new intro section is pretty good.

There will be an influx of new folks, but they'll Tier out accordingly and find a good playing experience level for themselves

Get ALL Newbies into a unit that can train them first thing, so that they NEVER EVER develop the Solo / Rambo / Stray Cat / Baby Seal, whiny Mindset to start with...!!! Then we have more units that can field 6-12 mans regularly from completely casual units, on up to the full comp units, and more TEAM based game play, and less stray cat puggies dieing in less than 2 min, and then wandering why they continually get stomped, and rage quit.....

Exactly :)

I will do my part towards helping newbies when I stumble upon them and if they are willing to learn (some might insist on finding out themself though). Maybe there should be some kind of pinned "The Steam Newcomer Thread" a few days before launch? So it will be easier for everyone to help out.

I think most will be surprised at how friendly the vast majority of the community really are. Steam is a big opportunity for MWO and PGI. WIth that said, I'm just not sure how well it will be received. I think it will go along the lines of the "first" community.

Lots of excitement at first. Lotsa cool stuff to learn. Then repetitive game play that offers nothing different or new. If they're going to go the esports route (always has and always be a big mistake in my opinion for this game in particular) then they have a LOT of work to do in balancing, promoting, marketing, etc.

MWO is a pretty game with nice graphics and big stompy robots. Once the novelty of robots and weapons and custom builds wears off, there's simply nothing else to do.
Stomp
Shoot
Repeat

Those types of games (in today's market) aren't going to do any better than they did prior to Steam with the exception of picking up some new long-term players. It will quickly get boring and repetitive unless they add some depth to the game though.
Stomp
Shoot
Repeat
Angry Birds gives me those mechanics AND a better storyline to follow while playing the game. (Which may also be why Angry Birds made more money than MWO hint hint PGI)
Give us a story and universe to be a part of. Not an arena to mindlessly blow each other up in. Those game modes are great, fun, and fine. When that's your ONLY game mode, well that's boring and players being to look elsewhere for their entertainment value.

MWO's saving grace always has been the F2P model. There will always be a base number of active players, but it's never going to "get over that hump" and gain popularity until PGI does something about this.

I've been playing every week since open beta and I'm still OK with Stomp-Shoot-Repeat. More $$$$ to PGI = better chance of adding more content, depth, etc. :)

Of course there are some content with that and there's nothign wrong with that. There's also nothing preventing PGI from adding (instead of limiting) ways to play the game and adding depth to the game. The majority of gamers today (which if you want to get real about it? look at the size of this community today and compare it to 2-3 years ago) It's stagnant. It's not growing. It's not expanding. It's stagnant.

You have the players like you that enjoy the stomp stomp pew pew pew
You have the new players constantly coming in and leaving after a while for the next big thing
You have vets that come in and out periodically

The retention in this game is horrible because of the simplicity. Outside of Btech geeks and stompy robot fans this game offers very little (if anything) different from every other shooter out there. The differences and unique aspects PGI COULD use to set them apart, seemingly get watered down or buffed according to "balance" (Sorry Paul, everything else aside, I think you have some very basic misconceptions about the game you're trying to balance and the ideas that you and PGI come up with for balancing are more complicated and nonsensical than need be KISS Keep It Simple Stupid no offense intended it's a good acronym for any and everyone)

PGI and MWO are a success in that they make money on their product. It's nowhere near as successful as it COULD be though. A few changes in philosophy and mechanics could make this an extremely popular game. There's no real competition. This is it for big stompy robots. The problem? If you continue with the complicated mechanics and balances eventually someone is going to come along with big stompy robots AND the depth I've discussed and take it all away.

You're a success PGI. Now become an even bigger success for the expenditure of zero extra overhead or expense.

I like how everyone own a Steam account with games and yet every time you mention Steam in a game that isnt on Steam then they automatically expect Steam Users to be completely inept 8008s.

But yeah the game only have battlemech to offer and if you don't fork the cash you dont pilot them. Ie the game is closed to outsiders, it's a recipe that works with a niche target audience.

I can't imagine those codkids lasting more than a day getting destroyed and not knowing why without leaving.
