Jumping & hiding or Firing in the back of the enemy with the Thor ?

That arouses the question of Zellbrigen once again.

Aidan Pride tried to use his Nemesis/Thor/Summoner in this way and got shot down by his sibko Marthe Pryde.

( I´m reading all my Novels again :) )
Yes, but that was a Trial of Position in which Aidan's being cocky opened the field into a free for all. His own Starmates could then shoot him and his guard was down. In a real ffa, you'd already be aware that anyone could kill you and probably play things a bit more cautiously. Oh, and I absolutely love the Jade Phoenix Trilogy.

From what I know about the Battletech universe, a Daishi will easily win, hands down. They're tough, they're powerful, and they've got so much reach they really don't even need to move. A single daishi costs as much as two atlases, anyway, if not more than two.

A clan 'mech will almost invariably win against an Inner Sphere machine of the same tonnage, that's why the point value of each clan 'mech is ridiculously high. Heck, a Puma/Adder costs more than a 3025 Atlas

I'll give it to the Atlas. Not only does it have solid armor and some good weapons in its favor, but no one takes it seriously, at least out-of-storyline. The whole Death's Head thing comes off as goofy more often than not, and in a straight free-for-all, people are more likely to try and kill off the mech they see as the greatest threat; after all, surely I (Daishi pilot, e.g.) can take out one goofy Atlas at the end of the match. But a damaged Daishi against a barely-touched Atlas? Not much of a fight.

It all depends on player reactions, of course. I officially pick the Atlas, but realistically, you could run this scenario a hundred times and witness a hundred distinct battles with a different beginning, middle, and end.

What variants are used for all those mechs, for instance is the Atlas a AS7-D, AS7-K, etc?

Fafnir has the negative of heavy recoil and low ammo. Also in a free for all it would be the first massed fire target. I chose the Daishi, even though it to suffers from the "OMG Kill that now!" syndrome.

In truth the lightest Mech would probably survive due to lack of threat value. IF the pilot used it wisely.

I think what you said is funny, the kill it now part, but the lightest 'Mech was the one I personally always killed first. Looks CAN be deceiving. The Puma is a clear example, by way of, 'Oh. It's a light 'Mech, let's just pass it by. Oh crap, it's dual ERPPC's just killed my 'Mechs remaining armor, one more shot and I might not survive'. No. The whole reason that I listed JUST these 'Mechs is solely from the fact that they ALL have the, quote, 'OMG Kill that now!' syndrome. I still go with my Fafnir, it has semi-decent speed for something that weighs that much. It has enough armor to ensure it at least has a chance to make it to the final 3 if a decent player is in the cockpit. If I had to chose the order in which I would kill the 'Mechs listed above, the fact that I am in a Fafnir top priority, I would go with:
  • Daishi
  • Hauptmann
  • Atlas
  • Nova Cat (possibility to have 3 ER PPCs, like a more mobile Awesome, can, and usually DOES, eliminate hostiles VERY quickly.)
  • Longbow (the ability to equip a grand total of 8 ER LRM 20's on a single 'Mech is a HUGE threat to just pure survival) :P
  • Templar
  • Mad Cat Mk II
  • Thor

Silly Clanners. If there are 9 mechs on the field of which 7 are assaults and the last heavy as nearly 20% more armor than your Summoner C, you bet I will be taking the high road and lay low for a while.

Then I will put that double tap UAC-20 with streaks for a good measure right in their rear torsos and XL engines ^_^

As much as I may personally dislike it (Due to the extended slugging matches which waste valuable killing time), I'd say the Daishi.
That thing is built like a 40k Titan. A real fether to knock down and stay down.
Unless the smarter pilots decide to focus fire on that mech instead of the others in the free for all, that would likely be the last mech standing.

This depends largely on what kind of terrain we're talking about. With a good pilot at the controls though, I'd put my money on the Thor. It's fast, has a lot of manuverability including jump jets to take advantage of the terrain, and a good weapons spread.

IMO mechs like the Daishi and Fafnir would be the first to die. They're slow as hell and present the most threat, so I can see them being ganged up on and taken out first.

Assuming default configurations for all 'mechs save the Atlas (it wouldn't be fair to pit the AS7-D against the other 'mechs), which I chose the AS7-K variant, and equally skilled pilots I would say that the Mad Cat Mk II would be a good contender for being the last 'mech standing (also the one I voted for).

The Atlas, Daishi, Fafnir, and Hauptman are all prime targets that the "lesser" 'mechs would probably target first in the hopes of removing them. Depending on the terrain available the Thor's extra mobility wouldn't help it out very much and its lower armour wouldn't be able to withstand any concentrated fire. Likewise the Longbow, in its default config, could excel in open terrain but suffer in city fighting or other heavy cover. Its speed is the same as the heavier Assault's which prevents it from escaping if anything closes within its LRM range, and medium lasers, or even medium pulse lasers won't cut it against the heavier armour.

The Nova Cat and Templar would probably be wiped out by the bigger 'mechs due to their greater threat, while the Mad Cat Mk II, given the correct terrain, could hang back and essentially snipe with its Gauss rifles and LRMs. Of course fighting in the City or with heavy cover would severely limit that ability as well.

Lastly, if canon variants are allowed, I'd still have to go with the Mad Cat Mk II, though outfitted with the "Enhanced" variant. Twin LRM-10s for range plus 2 ER Large Pulse lasers and 2 ER Medium pulse lasers packs an impressive punch, jump jets allows it to manouever well in heavier cover and 25 tons of Hardened armour means it can soak up more damage than any other 'mech I've seen (the equivalent of 400 points of damage in the TT).

Depends on the terrain (city, swamp, forest, plains, etc) ... but overall I'd say Daishi

Any a city map King Crab all the way. Just back up to a build set your feet down and go to town on all comers. On the plains a King Crab would get owned with it stock config.

By the way found a new battletech online game to kill time till new one comes out and killed the King Crab 3 on a plain map with a heavy, it was awesome.
