Especially since the hitbox pass the Catapult is a complete joke... very hard to do an XL now... and even with a STD the loss of a ST (and half of the armament) hurts A LOT. Tried my CPLTs last week. A complete disaster. The Jester was serviceable to some degree, but still got killed quickly and easily at times due to XL/large STs...

in fairness, though, even in Lore, Cats get their asses handed to them a LOT. they're a fire support mech. things just aren't meant for the frontlines. once the ECM change hits, they'll probably get used more, given they can actually get LRM locks again. just have the team make sure to cover them and they'll pound the crap out of the enemy. (the Archer might end up being a handy operating partner for 'em too.)

I've been beaten to saying this already but by god some mech need a rescaling.
Even the "modern" Black knight model seems huge next to Marauder.

Feel very sorry for catapult fans...you may as well pilot a stalker if you want an LRM boat. . The model is same size ish and 20 tons heavier.

Looking really nice, looking forward to pilot it next Tuesday. But scale-size is joke, compared to Cat, Knight and especially Orion.

It's a lovely model, but I just dont understand why its so short. I mean, from the grasshopper to this? I've always thought of the marauder as a tall and thin mech.

The problem is the in my opinion whole wrong implementation of LRMs as indirct firing weapons. LRMs are direkt fire weapons and do not get countered by ECM.

They can be fired in an indirect way if another friendly mech is spotting but due to getting a targetting malus on top of both mechs movement and target movement this was only usefull against slow/imobile/entranched targets. So this is a very rare case and by no means the standart.

My understanding is that they try to keep the VOLUME of mechs similar if they have the same tonnage, not the height, width, or depth. So, while the Marauder is shorter buy a bunch, it is also really, really long. It is one of those mechs that presents a bigger target turned sideways than it does head-on.

The Catapult was an odd choice for a comparison. It was one of the first mechs modeled and is way out of proportion using the current scaling 'rules'. Pretty much everything looks too small when you put it next to a Catapult.

Some mechs surely do need re-scaling (the Catapult, Quickdraw and Victor being some of the most in need from the IS side, if you ask me), but you basic humanoid mechs are always taller than non-humanoid ones. Look at the side view, and you can see why. If the Marauder was the same height as a Black Knight, you would have to make it a 100-ton Marauder II to justify it being that big.

Then you have thought of it wrong :P This is exactly what the Marauder should be. It's a terrifying mech because of its small frontal profile. It's the only mech that Natasha Kerensky fears running into.

This model is perfect. The Catapult is obviously grossly misscaled, but tye rest of the mechs are proportional to the Marauder, with it's long thin body. The Grasshopper is a famously tall battlemech.

A bit disappointed in just how far this PGI-Marauder dieviates from the original.

The original was from Macross, why it hasn't been used sense the early 90's

I'm not quite sure how the studio is actually doing the scaling, but volume alone clearly isn't the only consideration or else the lights would be much bigger.

If mechs were scaled purely on volume, there would be a much more subtle difference in scale as you moved from lights up through to assaults. When you double the dimensions of a 3D object while keeping density the same, its weight would be 8x as much as before. Going the other direction, making a mech half as big would reduce its weight to 1/8th of what it used to be.

Posted Image

This should illustrate the point. The middle Atlas would be a "true scale" 50 tonner, while the one on the right illustrates what happens if you wanted a mech half as tall as the original (again, it becomes 1/8 the weight, so 12.5 tons here).

It's worth noting that many lights weighing in around 30 tons are about waist high to the Atlas. So obviously the devs aren't just using volume when they scale a new mech. They are exaggerating the size difference between weight classes to make the little guys harder to hit.

My guess would be that they're knowingly fudging the square-cube law to preserve game balance. So a mech half the weight would have half the silhouette, rather than half the volume.

to everyone comparing the marauder vs timberwolf ("mad cat") vs. catapult:
the "mad cat" IS Name is shorthand for marauder catapult, because it was built to be a _mix_ of both.
even as RAL PARTHA lead miniatures, they are rougly same size.
and if you think the CAT is large - wait until you see a LGB-0W Longbow. those missile silos are light mech sized :P

Forget XL in catapult, not needed... :)

@Lol van Trollinger - http://www.sarna.net...r_Wolf_(Mad_Cat)

I don't think it was "built" to be a mix, it was incorrectly identified as the targeting computer couldn't work out what it was so kept switching designation between Marauder and Catapult.

I feel bad for you Cat fans. I mean, I have never properly piloted one of them, except one trial version in training grounds.

BTW. Arent the Catapults one of the mechs that did get votes to be rescaled? At least one of the top three in the heavy category. It indeed needs rescaling among a ton of others...

Catapults are among the 5 mechs that were voted for the re-scale.
Along with the following: Awesome, Quickdraw, Nova and Kitfox. Sadly, neither the Trebuchet, nor the Centurion - the original poster children of oversized medium mechs - made it into the winners of this lottery.

The Marauder picture from the homepage, just without all the text obstructing the view. Slightly different angle than the one in this thread, so i thought i'd post it here.

Some angles like this one it looks stunning, I think it would be the best looking mech in the game, but the annoying thought it doesn't look like the Zentradi command pod, keeps pushing into the front of my mind
