I think requiring JROTC in high school would help. Makes people learn to work with others and pick up some discipline.

As someone who never made it through MEPS I should have... well I could have lied about my meds and then lost my sh*t at submarine school so probably for the best.

Also second the NJROTC for the win, especially if your non-com is a Marine SgtMaj

Children need to be taught the importance of hard work and discipline, as well as the value of morals and being a decent person. All of this can (and should) be done largely by the family, and secondarily by the education system. The problem lies not so much with societal institutions, as with the home environment for many.

Military service is not required, and some of us disagree with it. Playing stompy robot shooting games and fake war is one thing, but the military (for all the side benefits) is really about preparing for real combat. This is sometimes (unfortunately) necessary, but some of us do not really approve of violence in reality.

political agendas and philosophies aside
I don't "approve of violence" so we can toss that right out ;)

In saying that, I also know reality doesn't care about my sensitivities and opinion of violence and as such, violence is an everyday natural occurrence.

No political agendas here. I would really rather stay out of all that. Philosophy, on the other hand... =D

Not claiming you like or dislike violence, ROTC/mandatory military service, in my mind, is not the answer, and serves a different purpose. I just am saying that while I agree there are problems with children today/societal behaviors, I feel there are more fundamental ways to solve the issue than requiring military service.

I also understand reality, and thus, I do not disagree with having a military in general.

I wasn't accusing you, simply stating I didn't want to get into that as well lol

I don't say it because I think they should be "trained for violence", plenty of countries do it. It's not like we're talking about putting them through ranger airborne training and shipping them out to the desert. There are tons of job within the military where valuable job skills and training are obtained for free.
