Did You Ever Feel the Pain?
Remember the last time you were spectating a player, and it was just painful to watch? I mean absolutely ******* demoralizing? These are the PUGs that put up 60 damage in an Atlas. They’re at full throttle, turning the same direction a light is circling so they’ll never catch it. They’re firing every weapon and overheating every time they shoot, despite not having any particular target in mind. They can’t hit the broad side of an Awesome, they’ve been walking into the same building for God knows how long, and they’re in a perpetual state of 3x zoom. They’re bad, and they should feel bad, right?
Wrong.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming to Terms with Cluelessness
Maybe they’re bad, but maybe they’re not. Maybe they’re getting used to a joystick. Maybe they’re drunk and messing around. Maybe they don’t play this game much because they spend their time doing other things. Maybe they are using a steering wheel. Maybe – just maybe – they’re like you once were: brand new and totally lost.
Regardless of the reason, the real maybe is this: maybe you shouldn’t be an *******. Maybe saying things like, “ur seriously the worst atlas pilot iv ever seen,” “OMG U SUCK,” and, “stupid pugs…” are totally unhelpful. I’m not big on coddling feelings, but what are you really accomplishing besides making another person feel ****** for attempting to scale this game's immensely steep learning curve?
A Little Empathy
It’s not like they don’t know how bad they are – they’re the ones struggling just to twist their ‘mech in the right direction; is there any reason to rub salt in the wounds of utter frustration? Remember the last time you tried something and you were super bad at it? Did someone call you a *** when you failed? Did they tell you to kill yourself? Did your father caustically mock you and tell you to “GTFO the car” because you stalled your manual the first time you shifted into gear? Do you think anonymity is an acceptable reason to be a huge ****?
One thing that’s long bothered me about the MechWarrior: Online community is that new players and PUGs are too often accosted for being new and clueless. It’s understandable: no one likes having bads on their team, but there’s simply no excuse for demeaning comments - particularly when it accomplishes nothing.
Channeling the Anger
I, too, am guilty of the frustrated rage. The two assault buddies that wander off together while the rest of the team gets wrecked, the guy that destroys the generator half-way into a CW match so everyone gets garbage rewards, the guy on a top-secret capture mission in a King Crab, the guy that's running around in a build like this - it's enough to make me pull my hair out. But how are they supposed to know? Those same scenarios appear entirely differently to an inexperienced player: I'm flanking, I just won us the game, I'm playing the objective, and I can engage at any range.
Mentor and explain - don't ridicule and attack. "Splitting up = losing in this game." Not, "OMG ******* idiots where are you going?" "Your build is going to make it hard for you. Check out Metamechs.com." Not, "Why the **** would you put an AC/2 on an Atlas? Uninstall pls." Not all of them will accept your sage advice; in fact, many of them won't. But being a rager isn't helping anyone.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't Be a ****
With the influx of new players coming into the game, I call upon each and every pilot to refrain from being a huge ****, regardless of how painful it is.
I’ve yelled at the screen in rage, I’ve been in tears laughing at a couple hilariously bad fights, and I’ve actually recorded several players as physical evidence that a player could be that terribad. Do whatever you want in the privacy of your own home or Teamspeak server. Ridicule, *****, and laugh away – just don’t do it in chat.
You could even go one step further and help them get better. Instruct them to turn the opposite direction that the light is circling. Tell them to zoom out. Point them at some of the great community resources out there. Hell, get them on your Teamspeak server and show them the ropes. Do something - anything - constructive instead of needlessly attacking people.
Remember that it’s another human being sitting in that cockpit. If you wouldn’t say it to their face, why say it at all?

I won't be meeting the Steam puppies for a few days, at least. Hopefully they learn in that time.

True for life in general. The happier you make the people around you the happier you'll be
Being helpful to the new players can be something you do because you have a soul and you care about other people or it can be something you do for completely selfish reasons (more players = more $$$ = better game for you!).
Either way, DO IT!

I do not promise to not slaughter them in my Jenner IIC with 6cSRM6.

Im willing to do my part and give advice in the in-game chat and on the forums when MWO hit Steam.
MWO need more players, and I think guiding newbies is a great thing to do in itself and as a long term investment so-to speak. Because who the heck wants to play a new game they want to get into but cant stand to play, when almost all are bashing their attempts when they try to get the gripes with the game? NONE!
We all were newbies/ noobs/ greens once. And this game have a steep learning curve, some still struggle due to new content/ gameplay/ tweaks etc. Though it have gotten ALOT better with the new Academy feature. We need to let new players know its a fantastic place to start. Also old vets might get great use out of it, if they have just come back to this game after some time due to different reasons.
We need to train them. From this
To this!
It can be done! (just give em a mech, not a tank... just dont, they will be like a sitting duck *ehem*.. pug)
Also. Cant let grudgers, bigots, salters kill the very game they themself have played or outsiders that just prejudge this game without giving it a chance/ the patience! Being revenge/ hate reviews on STEAM or otherwise. Dont let them steal the pugs attention towards making them loathe or distrust MWO, because its getting there, slowly but steadly!
Battle on...

If they are all starting in Tier 5 as PGI has said all new players will, then we will not see them often for a loooooooong time.

I really doubt we'll see this big influx of thousands of new mwo players here. sad, i know but get real, what numbers do you expect?

This. Most of us should not see them in solo PUG queue if matchmaker is doing it's job. That is, if we gain a large enough player base.
I'm hoping I will not see someone in general chat announce they just downloaded it from Steam and this is their first match.

We as in the "butt hurt's" have plenty to play....lots of good games out there that get my time and money. Could be MWO if PGI gets it act together though.

A lot of people browse the F2P section on Steam regularly so I'm expecting a fairly large initial influx. If 1 out of every 1000 Steam users downloads the game we will be looking at thousands of new players.

500 would be great, 1,000 was the limit i expected to see realistically.
but even 500 to 1,000 new players in this game (mainly lower tiers to start im sure) will be great for the avg causal gamer. I dont think anyone in t2 or above will even notice the difference.

Honestly if a customer like you came in to my store every day and moaned about something that we messed up 3 years ago i would tell you to take your money elsewhere.
But that's just me and my business, wouldn't be the first and wont be the last time I told a customer "Your money isn't worth the headache you create."
and you can do as you wish with your time, be it as nonconstructive and spiteful as you want. But like i said earlier i would think that for your health, well being, and sake of life in general you would have learned to move on from things like this by now.

My health is and well being is great. Former college athlete who works out 5 to 6 days a week. Family life is awesome. Two amazing daughters and a wife 10 years younger than me who is about to start competing in fitness competitions,(you could never tell she ever had a kid) and a blossoming career with a major Social networking company. Life couldn't be better. Thanks for being concerned though.

"Hi and welcome to MWO"
"Please visit the new player forums, they are very helpful"
"Press F4 for first person and a minimap"
"You can disable arm lock in options"
"LRMs have a min range of 180m"
Now that we have an actual tutorial I'll be pointing more people towards that.
