Steam will mean meeting a lot new players, an people with fresh Steam accounts seeking attachement ot the existing MWO community. People that may be your future gaming buddies.
Yet I want to raise some attention for you all, especially people who will be new at steam.
It is about Steam accounts getting hacked.
So something official from the 9th on Steam to read
http://store.steampo...com/news/19618/
These attacks are for trade scamming and trying to get keyloggers onto your system.
With this be careful out there when you get friend invites of suspicous low ranked new steam accounts asking for a friend request. Especially those that have their Accountinformation in private settings. If you are new at Steam, there is surely not much they can steal form your account, since these mostly target at items in your steam inventory, which a new account won't have. But that doesn't makes you less of a target in first place. Be even more careful when they send you links, its not uncommon that they send you links looking in first place like pictures but bear some selfexecuting extentions. And keep paying attention even if real Steamfriends send you them, because it can happen that they got hacked as well.
I am not trying to scare you away from steam at all, It's great with all it's features. Yet these things are not uncommon, but in relation to the userbase quite low. If I should estimate it I get roughly around 1 of these "friend request" per week. So it is a present threat that you should be aware of.
Stay safe out there.

I say no. Usually they do, but the malware program vs antimalware is like a race. So it could be you trigger a working malware your antimalware does yet not know. Caution is the best protection at all. But it will usually protect you in most cases.

If you use Steam for MWO, you will raise player counter for MWO, which is beneficial to the game.

Thats the time for a slogan:
Ask not what Steam can do for your MWO, ask what you can do with steam for your MWO.

Anyway, on to topic: Enable two-factor authentication (what they call "Steam Guard")!

I just know steam as a program that locks up my PC when it boots up,
I miss the days when you went to the store to buy a PC game
I have had a steam account for 4 years and it did get hacked a few years ago but I did not care since I never used it
Yesterday was the first time I logged on to my steam account lol
I dislike Steam and the whole concept of steam nothing against steam players
I bought a COD game back 2012 and it said I needed Steam account to play I been butt hurt about the whole Idea ever since
Why the heck would I want to go to some third party to play a game that I spent my money on
now come To find out steam wants a kickback from the game developers
The talent and creativity is with the game designers that's where I want my money to go

I've used steam for years with no trouble whatsoever. Don't be frightened off by this, be frightened off by the fact that these same types of people try to get into your email to hack your real bank accounts.
As long as you are as careful with steam passwords and friends as you are with your email you will be fine and Steam is a great way to find out about games that wouldn't see the light of day otherwise.

I had a Steam account years ago just for Steam Forum discussion on a game I used and there was no other online community to talk about it at.
I recently tried creating a Steam account to provide comments on MWO but it will not let me post unless I spend $5 that I am not spending so that's that.
I did note in the profile setup there are checkboxes for privacy that are to protect users from having thier accounts scammed regarding selling on Steam.

The purchase to post thing is new as these same ding-dongs that are trying to hack accounts are using free accounts to do it, so to curtail it they force a money purchase as a way of validation that you aren't scum like them.
Same way that MMOs want you to purchase something before you can use in game mail and chat so that you aren't trying to sell things through the world chat system and clog up the game.

It's a side effect from all the scammign that happened, it does unfortunately always have a downside for people not scamming. very sad at all, but just shows how much these things escalated that someone felt forced to enable some counter measures.
but start to wonder, do you really need to spent 5$ I saw some obviously new accounts commenting in the MWO forum of steam, doubt they spent 5$ just to talk there.

I had that happen once so I switched the email account it was linked to (was on an old yahoo one, switched to gmail) and it is fine now. You should change your steam password every 6 months or so just like email anyway.

The OP is not incorrect, but it has gotten a lot better lately and to be perfectly fair, 99.9% of cases are due to player ignorance. It's almost unheard of to simply have your account 'hacked' without first allowing them to get a program on your PC.
Between e-mail verification, Steamguard not allowing ANY other PC than your own to login, and the phone authenticator; there is literally nothing to worry about.
Don't click links from random people, and you'll never get hacked.
(The reason for the link being the go-to method, is it's simple to script a hack in a browser that automatically transfers your Steamguard file to their PC)

Understood, still while this is similar to how Some MMOs give you bonuses for spending $5 on them, I have no reason so, just wanted to post in Discussions. MMOs do not ban you from posting for not spending money.

Also understood, that is what Steam told me, could not post in Discussions unless I spent $5.
