Pretty sure a fair portion of the cost will be picked up by partners/sponsors. I doubt PGI is bearing the entire cost themselves.

I seriously doubt MWO has enough exposure to warrant any larger sponsor money. I would be very surprised if not the large majority of the price money is from PGI themselves. And boy is it going to be a big waste of money.

Apparently the business model is the same as the in game loyalty points model: Pay people to be players.

Note to PGI: You cannot buy your friends or fans. In the end, they use you and toss yo to the curb when you run out of goodies.

The comp teams would split and enter multiple teams I am sure. Why shouldn't they? People would fill out rosters to join this I wouldn't worry about how many teams there are. There are only two units that would really have a shot at winning though.

Well if there isn't enough teams to have a meaningful competitive (and substantially prized) tournament, then the entire concept of having a tournament is a wash from the get go. No one is going to care about Kcom 1 fighting Kcom 2 to see who fights the winner of MS1 vs MS2 or whatever the few units might break down into.

There just isn't anything there worth selling to make anything back on putting on an event like this. New or potential players aren't going to care about it, current players outside of the few main groups won't care in the least - and it will do nothing but spend out money with little to no potential of a return from new player recruitment - or hyping up casual players to buy new mechs/decals/colors whatever.

Tournaments is something you build up - you don't leap from having small ones with the same 100-200 people with small-time payouts to something with 100k and flying people around the world. How many people actually watch the current tournaments anyhow? I'd wager no more than 50% more than the total amount of participants.

Esport could work if they can bring a cinematic experience to the audience. Basically if they can make watching an MWO match feel like a kickass battle scene out of a movie it could be really popular. Really need great spectator tools though.

Awesome exhibition match last week between 228 and SJR. Anyone know if it was recorded anywhere?
Hopefully the Worlds will be more than just twitch, because well, viewing times that may be good in NA kind suck elsewhere.

Its been almost a month already since the big announcement and we in the Oceanic are raring to go
So ah, details please? Will it be 4v4, 8v8, 12v12? Random mode? Mech tonnages? etc etc etc?
Keen to get some practice matches going.

Well unless they really, really, really work hard to make CW both interesting to play and to watch - they are going to have a pretty boring event with a ton of money invested and that's about it.

CW isn't really that much better than standard drops other than you have a bigger selection of mechs to choose from and slightly larger (if stupidly designed/channeled) maps. It would be insanely boring for spectators because there is no tension build up between teams, its just forced skirmish mode with 4 drops.

MWO will never be a successful esport the way it is now

1) its boring to watch, always the same mechs/weapons, mechs die instantly, commentators cant keep up, and theres no skillplays at all
2) theres no real potential for game upsets once one team gets behind
3) game is over in like 6-8 minutes (and often decided well before then) which is lame, most starcraft matches last longer than that and theyre only 1v1

Not saying MWO cant ever be a successful esport but a lot needs to change first...

Hi guys I don’t post on forums much at all, I just play the game, I work too much haha. However I will comment in on this since I played in and Won the first ever $100,000 Meltdown tournament for MechWarriors put on by Microsoft. I have a lot of articles on the event but it was the pioneering of the first major online game ever put on by Microsoft. The match was 2 vs 2 (my teammate was Sunscat of British Columbia (Canada) and there were 750 entered teams then. We had about 4 weekends of Bracketed play that narrowed things down to the semi finals and then the finals the top 8 teams were then flown to Game Works in Seattle Washington to play in the real Mechwarrior Pods and for the championship over a Lan Based system. I have played Mechwarriors since its first ever release. So I can agree that this game has some issues to stay true to the following, most notable to me is how they try to make everything function so generically. The powerful lure to Mechwarriors has always been the gameplay and the skill and knowledge of configuring and building the best Mech for given conditions. The game currently lacks the ability to do that because it is overbalanced. What I mean is everything has been taken away from the skill of the player to configure his Mech to the point everything is like Nascar or the same. Every player is now made equal and you find yourself just placing weapons and adjust armor which is boaring. I really love this game and I applaud PGI for their efforts even though it is still does need content and tweaks . Boy I wish I could sit down fill their heads with all my knowledge and background over the years. I honestly believe this game has super potential. If anyone wants to see pictures or more details on the event just let me know it was an awesome experience. My major issues I hope they will soon fix are:

1) More weapons systems
2) The speed to visual effect is grossly off and needs to be fixed, for example
52kmh is 32mph and it feels and looks like 10mph
160kmh is 99mph and the look and feel is more like 50mph
3) Mech repair Dropships
4) The Game does not need a TIER system at all, the old system game rooms were better.

Don't think anyone would worry if you show up three months after it's over.... like your posting in this thread.

Okay Reviving an old thread because I played you and Sunscat 1v2 on the first match of Meltdown. I was 16 at the time but I joined the tourny anyway, LOL. I was running an AC/20 Anni and I made guys both work for that win against me.. I think the final score was 6 to 10. That was a lot of fun and glad to know MW is still going strong with veteran players.. Ive been out of MW gaming forevr and wanted to start again I just happened to come across your post and it brought back the awesome memories of MW3 and the Gaming Zone! IIRC the Prize was 25K or a Harley? When did it get to 100k?
