General rule of building in MWO is, upgrade DHS (if not yet) and upgrade Endo-steel.
As for KGC builds, it depedns. Some play Quad UAC,

Frankly, I think the Trial build is pretty damn nice. If I had that mech, I might simply run that build.
About upgrading to Ferro: it depends on your build, but you probably won't have the space for it. The way Ferro works is your armour will weigh less, but it takes up 14 of those slots where you could put weapons and equipment. In essence, it's low-density armour which is really light for the protection it offers, but takes a lot of space on your mech. It's very rarely seen on Assaults because their weapons take so much space on the mech.

Depends on how much space you have. Usually it is not. Endo and Ferro take up pod space in the mech, but takes some of the weight off. Endo takes off more than Ferro, so it is superior unless your build has so much empty space that you can take both.

Depends on the role you want to fill. Dual 20s pack one heckuva punch, but are obviously limited on range. I run one King Crab with dual 20s, one with quad UAC5s (which is a beast), one with dual Guass (though the Guass nerf hit it hard), four mediums, three SSRM2s, and an LRM15 - a very versatile mech, and another one that I can't remember what loadout it has right now. I have a Crab for all occasions. I'm a huge fan of the King Crab.

That said on any mech you customize double heat sinks are must, with very few exceptions, so they should always be your first upgrade (luckily the 000B comes with them). After that Endo Steel is the best upgrade. On all Inner Sphere chassis Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous armor take up 14 crit spaces. Once you get into medium chassis or heavier having both is not usually viable because it would take up too many crit spaces (there are some exceptions to this though). Endo steel is better because it always gives you more tonnage back to work with. So you normally want to upgrade to that quickly, even if FF comes stock. Swap the two, it is always worth it.
If you are looking to change your build from the trial build or don't have the money to do make that build, but really liked how that trial mech performed you could try something like this: KGC-000B Unfortunately you may not have the cash to do that build either after springing for the mech itself.
It would be a bit cheaper as far as cbill's since you will want to change FF to ES. Also buying the STD 325 (which I like in a lot of my Assaults in Heavy's) will cost a bit too,so saving 150,000 cbills per AC by using AC5's over UAC5's could be helpful.
The real question is how tight are cbills right now? If they are you can try this poor mans variant for the KGC-000B. It will only cost you an extra 2,826,288 assuming you have none of the weapons in your inventory. Another option that could save you money is to keep 2 AC20's (something like this), but the Ghost heat on those suck and can be tough to manage.
The hardest part when first starting this game is managing your CBills. I remember trying a build when I first started that I thought would be awesome that required me to get an XL 280, which are very costly, and I ended up ditching the build quickly. Luckily the XL 280 is a really nice sweet spot engine that I use a lot in other builds, but at the time it caused me a bunch of CBill grinding time because I did not have another mech to really use it in.
Also never sell back equipment to get CBills (well maybe single heat sinks). That will come back to haunt you later without a doubt.

Yes, this is an absolute (might be able to get away with it in a Victor, but that's about it). The XL 280 I was referencing above was for a 55 ton medium mech, That is what I played mostly when I first started, and the cost of that engine before I was ready set me back a bit.
