youknow a double heat sink is just as effective or more effective at crit padding...

My Preferred Wubmaster for example - ends up with 2 free slots and 2 free tons. Currently I chop off 1 ton of armor and put a CC in the head. But I could just as well put inert guass ammo in there to suck up a hit as when you are firing from MPL range the CC isn't really earning its 3 tons.

Not going to be hugely life sustaining, but if you can glance a blow into a wasted shot destroying ammo, that can give you one more hammer to drop before you go down.

Swap 2 MPLs for an LPL. Or throw an LRM5 in there for suppression and assist farming.

You only crit-pad with half-ton Gauss ammo slots when you are using a Gauss Rifle. If you crit-pad with Gauss ammo, and you do not have a Gauss Rifle, then your career as a spreadsheet warrior would end the moment you exited excel and hit Quick Play.

It's folly.

It would be likely without the guass, and I've got more than a few mechs with 1 slot open on each ST, Arm, and Head after DHS and weapons. Rather than toss in a CC, a few 1/2 tons of guass ammo might be just as useful.

If you have tonnage left over in your mech build that you can't do anything with other than add useless gauss ammo (because you don't even have a gauss rifle) ... then your build has something wrong with it.

Not really since it takes up 3 crit slots but only has 10 health.

Where three gauss takes up 3 crit slots and has 30 health.

Thats three times as much health for crit padding.

So if youre using gauss anyway you might as well crit pad with 1/2 ton gauss. But its not worth it if youre not using gauss.
