Hello

well i was looking at the steam stats and found this

Mechwarrior Online....

current players: 2360
Peak today: 4155

(this is like 5 mins ago)

Now i dont know if this number represent all those players connected via steam or all connected to the game server.

So in case if this number is of connected via steam, then in that case a peak of 4155 is quite good imo as it means the non steam players (assuming here ) of around 5k and making a total of close of 10k population is not bad at all.

on the other hand if the number represent a total player base (steam+non steam) in that case its an okish number i would say. the game population is stable, not decreasing or increasing.

if its the first situation than its a pretty much slap for those people who were all doom and gloom about low population, game is dying, steam launch will kill it etc etc etc... this shows the game is far from dying, its not on life support etc etc....

Its still newish on Steam. Chances are a good portion of that crowd are just curious folks looking to try out a new free game.

Give it a month or 2 and we'll see who has stuck around.

I believe it's the number running steam in online mode. Steam in offline mode doesn't track AFAIK.

It will probably keep going up for a bit, then level off after the number of new players matches the number that try it then stop playing, then go down a bit once everyone that wants to try it has. It will be a while before PGI can determine the net gain from Steam.

Steam in offline mode won't track, and people connected by the client directly w/o a Steam specific install won't count either.

Keep in mind, there's almost certainly more non-Steam players than Steam players, at least right now. I doubt a huge number re-installed the game under Steam immediately.

offcourse its new.. the point is that if this number represents the steam community only.. then we can very safely assume that the non steam population is of decent size as well...

I actually found this on Steam. Not sure how it gets the Total Owner number, but it's pretty cool.

Steam only counts players who launch the game through steam.

And it's save to say that most of those playing on steam are fresh accounts. Just take a look at the global achievements.

They are retroactive. When i launched the game through steam, i immediately got all achievements. Still, below 7% have unlocked achievements like "500 assists on X mechtype", which anyone who played this game for a considerable amount of time would have.
Yesterday, 500 assist in a heavy achievement was just above 8% of the steam playerbase, now it's 6,9 which means new accounts were added.

The low percentage on all achievements is a strong indicator for the vast majority of steam accounts being fresh ones.

Surprisingly high numbers. I imagine the overwhelming majority of MWO players are still running MWO without Steam.

Shame those numbers are so low - let's hope they don't drop off.

Actually the Steam numbers for MWO are pretty damn good. Also i think its safe to assume most players that played before the steam release did not move to a steam client (i for one did not) so think of the steam number as pretty much how many more players we have since steam release not the overall population.

No incentive to convert to steam... just locks family sharing when you don't really need steam to run the game

Without knowing things like if the account was created through steam, how long they played, and having about another 6 months of data, right now we know nothing much beyond purely what is presented.

Any speculation or analysis beyond "this many people are playing the game through Steam at this time" is going to be bobbins and wrong, or blind bias.

I'm in the crowd that didn't move to steam, though I wish I could make it count there.

Still, looks good so far.

my point is that if steam numbers is close to 4k at this moment...then we can assume a closer number plays non steam version as well (peak times that is). so close to 8-10k is not a bad number at all for a niche game...

You don't have to, start the download in steam then cancel and delete local content, then just drag the Mechwarrior Online folder into the steamapps/common folder and job done. When you launch MWO it starts the download, checks the files and you're good to go.

Another good reference: http://steamcharts.com/app/342200

The numbers seem to be sticking pretty close together, so I'd say we have a good measuring stick for how this game is doing on steam.

For point of comparison:

Warframe's page: http://steamcharts.com/app/230410
War Thunder: http://steamcharts.com/app/236390

Numbers are quite strong versus the latter; not so much the former. But again, doesn't take into account people using the legacy client.

I reinstalled the game from Steam for the sake of convenience and I am sure some portion of the player base did as well. As for stats, well, I would expect the turnaround to be quite big at this point.

But judging from the overall number of positive reviews I expect MWO to be at least marginally popular with Steam crowd. Of course, a bit more advertising would do much good too.
