Just a thought but isn't being inclusive to players who share a love for a game a better choice than excluding them?
I get what your saying.CW is not solo or newbie friendly but explaining this and preparing new players goes a long way rather than just telling them don't do it.
I would think telling them HOW is better than DON'T.
Honestly I would recommend a new player to play with a player unit for a while.Several player units have open recruitment and many do not require membership to play with the unit or have access to their team speak channels.
This is probably the quickest way up the learning curve as it grants access to experienced mentors with team speak channels to use to impart the mentoring with.
I'm not saying that all new players must JOIN a player unit.
I'm saying there is a significant benifit to be had from being mentored by a player unit.
If the player likes the unit life they stay if they don't they don't have to do anything they don't want to do.There is no shortage of casual player units that make for excellent places to learn the ins and outs of MWo.

One hopes the group queue will have enough players for the group matchmaker to sort well - but so far, I'm not sure that has happened, perhaps volume will change that - in the meantime, CW is probably the safest place for them - the only way i can fairly reliably get them against other groups of mostly new players. And it has more time to set up and explain basic strategies and plan of attack.
If they can only play in the solo queue, in time, you may as well be playing a single player game.

When you click the faction play button, you get a full page warning basically saying "This is a shark-den. This is not recommended for beginners. This is not for you. Come back later." if someone chooses to click through that and THEN get annoyed... well that's their own fault.

I tell them that quick matches earn them C-Bills faster. Works better.
I tell them to join Teamspeak first.
If they do that, and some actually do, they are actually interested in learning and getting better. If and when they do show up, they are given a wealth of information and even with a Trial deck, if they show willingness to learn/listen, they are invited to join CW drops and get some hands on experience.
It can be a painful experience for them, but they are surrounded by 11 people all willing to help.
Those that join TS Faction Hubs and ask questions, no matter how noobish/"dumb" the questions are to the Vets, they are answered. Those that ask questions and want to learn and get better, those are the ones added to Friends lists and asked and welcomed back.
The most minimal amount of effort can gain a maximum benefit.

Let them jump into CW.. let them see what a joke it is and maybe then they'll decide not to play CW... and then again this game is meant for all and like said before invite them to a group.. help them out... be friendly and not some elitist douchebag (not directed to OP) everyone whines there aren't enough CW players and then these posts show up.. everyone was new at one point and just how do you think they should learn CW without jumping in....
But then again you have situations like the stocking stuffer event where they dish out rewards for CW an Pugs so don't expect any segregation there..

I'd much rather play a CW anytime with 1000s of steam n00bs who are utterly clueless.
Much more preferable than having to play at a very specific times and wait upwards of 15-20 minutes just to have a game with a few dozen entitled, whining, self righteous and insufferably pedantic, Tier obsessed twonks who have about as much wit, personality and charm as a mutated limpet on the side of a septic tank.

We had a really amazingly funny situation yesterday where we started off with all light mechs (including ojne player who would soon turn out to be a steam newbie).
We all rush ahead on dropping out of the dropships and after a few seconds we hear something over VOIP.
Well, we were able to rush in as an 11 player chaos blob while the new guy got assigned to opening up the second door generator. By the time we were done and destroyed inside he had managed to open the door to 90% before being destroyed himself. He was usefull in the first round after receiving information on what to shoot to open a door.
After that his other mechs were able to kep up with us and he ended up doing half way decently becasue he received information on what was about to happen and why we were not moving in some situations and were moving in others. He was able to shoot the same mechs, move with the team and even get a few kills.
OK, his damage was "relatively" low, but that is to be expected if a player doesnt know how to aim with different weapon speeds (ie. leading a target with missiles or Balistics but not lasers)... but in the end of the day, I hiope he had fun, and everythign else will come with practice... including the changing if a reactor on a mech .

One gateway setup would be to allow only 2 trial mechs to populate the drop deck, with additional instructions of using the solo queue to earn and basic/elite at least two other mechs before they may proceed into CW. They can of course "purchase" mechs via cash, either direct RL cash or MC for in-game purchases. Should there be additional restrictions that the owned mechs have to be at least basic'd?
Of course, playing via CW allows you to see the numbers dropping and it is the only queue that lets you do with 4 (FOUR) mechs in a session and your contribution matters (win a sector or lose a sector) instead of the perceived death matches in the solo/group queue.

New players should be mastering their mechs, finding their preferred builds, completing the acadamy, seeing what works for them and what doesn't, learning proper positioning and tactics and building up their drop decks before looking at CW. Lower tiers in solo queue is a way better place to do that.
