Just came from a match in which squirrel hunting was the prime reason for the loss (or the win of the enemy). It was Terra Therma, and a Wolfhound pilot ran by our main group while we were just entering the center. Rather than pushing to the center, which by that time was not controlled by any team (both had a few Mechs in there), I saw 8 Mechs turning to chase the Hound. Of course, that is how the center was lost. Then the same group stuck on a ramp to be shot one by one.
I saw the game was lost and took another ramp for kamikaze run. It worked, solo-killing a Banshee. But that was small consolation.
Moral of the story: the Wolfhound pilot would have deserved all praise for the victory. He did everything right. We did everything wrong.

Stop Running After Lights Why Is That So Hard To Understand?!

It's also important to recognize and respond accordingly when a bunch of your teammates are breaking off to go after a lone light. I have seen plenty of times where there is a lull in the fight, a light pops up, people chase, and then the other guys who weren't paying attention decide this is a great time to charge the enemy's main force. Then they die and scream at the other people for chasing squirrels.
A large part of succeeding in solo queue is map awareness. If your team decides to chase some guy, then you need to react accordingly. Either follow them to maintain the deathball, or play defensively, until the other guys get back. Avoid giving the other team a favorable head on fight.

I ride heavy and I wish our lights were around chasing their lights instead of being a squirrel - I hate getting cored in the back because all the med / lights aren't on point

I can sympathize, but no Light pilot worth his salt wants to 1v1 another Light pilot. Unless the other guy is new or bad I'm coming out of that duel with a beat up Mech and maybe a kill. Mediums should respond to Lights, then your Lights can join in and make it a 2v1, easy kill and much less damage received.
