Victors are a bad choice right now. Their missile tubes are so small that firing even SRM6 is a pain.

I should have mentioned the Hunchback. Lots of people swear by them, they are an iconic Mech, and there's lots of different versions. Most rely on their quirks to be effective, and I still find them quite squishy vs Shadowhawks. The Hero Grid Iron is a one-trick-pony (Gauss) which got savagely nerfed during the last quirk pass, but is still serviceable.

yeah sadly i'm iffy with them. their hunch is my only issue with them.

Also what are peoples thoughts on Dragons?

The Dragon 1N is quirked to have the fastest AC5 refire rate in the game. That is designed to make up for the fact that the chassis overall has a huge CT and isn't very durable. Neither of the Heroes are that good.

Dragons probably work fine in Tier 4 matches. In higher tiers enemies take off the weapon arm in a flash.

Dragons are generally not good. Really, 60 tons is an awkward weight in MWO. It's up there with 25 and 45 tons as the "often tough to work with" weight. There ARE some good things about the DRG chassis...

Those with torso E hard points, have those points mounted up high for good hill humping, and the arms can be corner poked with minimum exposure of the torsos. The DRG-5N has THE BEST AC/5 quirks out there, and that made it REALLY popular for a while. They can be really quick for a heavy-class IS battlemech, too. Even with the stock 300 engine, it runs as fast as a TBR or EBJ. And with that big CT bullet-magnet, you may as well run that everyone-has-three-of-it Vlar 300 XL engine. You don't have the weight to really BOAT heavy weapons, so you can run ENDO/FF in it to free up weight for a bigger AC or Gauss, or a couple of LL/PPC/ERPPC.

And there are BAD things about the chassis...

At 60 tons, you don't get much armor or structure. They've quirked-in a LOT of structure buff for the DRG, but they've also coded-in more critical damage for a lot of weapons, and even the nerfed MGs are still gonna rip an open ST apart on that DRG in seconds, structure buff or not. The CT, as stated above, is ENORMOUS on those things, and even a Day One new player can pick that out and swat it from 600+ meters reliably. Seriously, go do the Shooting Gallery or Onslaught in the Academy, and pay attention when Dragons go by. YOU CAN NOT MISS THAT THING. It bends space-time to draw enemy fire to it, like a black hole or something. NUTS. And kinda scary when you're driving one. Hard points tend to be in the arms, which DO kinda stick out. Good for early corner peeking, BAD for late-game anything.

Its speed and quirks simply can't compensate for its shortcomings, except in the hands of a very few mutant hybrid mechwarriors who simply will not let it go. If you notice its conspicuous absence from virtually all meaningful play, now you know why.

I know I'm late to the party, but far as "assault" mastery bundles, I think they are too expensive. It is not ~that~ difficult to acquire the three assaults on your own; especially once you have one of them. Highest I'd go is maybe a heavy mastery bundle, and even then I'm not as 'big' on the idea. Mediums or lower are certainly worth their salt.

HBK's... the hunch used to be a big flaw, but since the armor boost, and the structure boost, you can actually tank with it.. You first tank with your none hunch side,, when that gets low, you start tanking with the hunch. On more than one occasion as of late i have heard in game... WHY WON"T THAT HBK DIE!!!! You really need to twist and spread.. But the buffs are really pretty sweet.

Dragons.. the biggest problem with dragons is people play um like heavies. You need to play um like a medium.. they are also very fast. Over 100KPH makes it the fastest heavy in the gamem the Jester comes in just behind it. Only a couple of mediums are faster, the stormcrow which is basically the same speed, and the cicada and ice ferret. Only other faster mechs are lights. They are fast lance support flankers.

The also are great fun to wolf pack with lights, as long as they don't mind being a bit slower.. get a couple of lights and a dragon as a flanker, and you have some serious fire/power The lights swarm,, and the dragon just packs on huge damage. Fun mechs, but like others have said, they are harder to play.. Upper tiers i dunno about.. other than.. sorta what is the difference.. ya loose your arm, or the CT or ST anyway.. at least that is how it goes for me.. no damage/dead next second.. ahh the joys of competitive play.. Lastly, I didn't see anyone mention it.. But the Kintaro Golden Boy, is an LRM5 machine.. i have watched this mech do some crazy stuff over the years. I'd say it has to rate right up there with the best LRM flankers in the game.

Trebuches look like lots of fun, and were great mechs in the day, but now they seem a bit lacking. But that said, they are getting a resize sometime, but no clue when.. could be a lot longer than you wanna wait.. but when it does i'll bet it makes a nice come back

just remember, with the Boxing day sale on right now, its cheaper to get the mechs individually... if you have spare bays that is. I took advantage and bought back a large number of the hero's I Stupidly sold off before my last break from the game
