I get what you're saying Sandpit. The question is where to draw the line.
Fortunately, you made your line clear (on page 6 or 7, I think it was), but I think the majority of people arguing that "Pub games don't matter" are referring to having fun in the quick drops, without bothering overly much about existential conundrums like "Tactics".
And then they get some high and mighty Tier 1 wannabe jumping up and down, waving his hands, and yelling over VOIP about how we are "All Bad, and our mothers should be ashamed they ever pooped us out" etc. The majority of us are referring to this kind of player, when we say they should join the group queue.
Don't get me wrong, I agree that people should try to win. But the Quick Play queue is bound to have a few oddballs, or muppets, or people that just want to pick their nose and watch porn while the game idles in the background.
And it will also have players like me who are running Super Stock Urbanmechs, or 12 Flamer Novas, or that brand spanking new STK-4N, which is still actually Stock because there wasn't enough C-bills left over to fit it out.
The problem is, not everyone draws the same line you do, as regards to griefing. Many would probably consider my Super Stock AC 20 STD60 Urbie to be someone just Trolling. Some would believe it is deliberate sabotage of their KDR. Some would consider my refusal to run META in the Quick Play Queue to be an affront to their god. But I will do my best to win with that build. And then we get some tryhard, who goes postal in team chat / all chat / VOIP. And our response is, "It's Just the PUG queue".
Because, if they seriously wanted to avoid all the grief, they would find 12 like minded individuals, and play in the competitive (AKA Group) queue, where they could have all their Tier 1 Uber-mechs, with super leet skilled players, and Battle Plan 32 Alpha-C.
Yes, everyone should try to win, but PUGs will be PUGs.
