Mine is originally a character name for a short story I wrote a long time ago that I liked and have used it often as a tag or alias in games. I used this tag here because it was what I used while playing MW4 Mercs. Perhaps I'll draw fire because of it, perhaps not. :D

Chose mine from an old blues album from I believe the 1960s called 'The Howling Wolf sessions'.

There is a new kpop group Hello Venus and one member I really like goes by Lime. That reminded me of The Darjeeling Limited when the guy kept calling the girl on the train sweetlime because she would always offer those drinks. In similar ridiculous reasoning that he used for choosing too call her that, I used this as a nickname for Lime, and used it for MO just because I signed up at about the same time as all this.

I thought of my nickname when i needed to make a GM account on a private server of RF Online when the admin asked me to become one.
The admin and the head GM told me that a short name would be easier for the players to contact me.

So i went searching for a short but still memorable name and i came across the name "Helix" in my biology book :D
I thought it was a great name so they introduced me in the server as [GM] Helix.

After some time when i started playing other online games i saw that Helix was always taken, so then i came up with HelixNL since im from the Netherlands.

This is a name that, in a couple forums, I've had since the days of Westwood Online as far back as ... 2000, I think? I was big into Red Alert 2, but at the same time I was writing a few of my own things -- one of which, coincidentally, was a BattleTech fan-fiction set ahead of Dark Ages before the Dark Ages existed. I named myself after the focus of this fanfic. (It was shortened to "prdarkfox" on WOL, which I still use from time to time if the name is too long.)
Being a teenager, and possibly furry, too (and too far shut in to really care what other people thought) it's named after a genetic project that for once didn't go horribly wrong.

I started online gaming round when South Park first came on the air, and thought the name would be unique. And for the most part is.

Kinda dumb but I just got finished playing a match over the board game and was signing up for hotmail when joking I told my friend that I'd wished I'd had a Wolftrap to handle the Wolfhounds he played against me instead of the Mongoose and Centurion I'd fielded...so I typed it into hotmail it wasn't taken...so it became my hotmail and my callsign ever since(close to 15 years now).

Well back in the 80s when I started playing the original Battletech TT game, I ran a merc company (started as a partly crippled lance) in a mates game called Dray Co. From there it's kinda obvious.

Basically all the names i would normally choose for MMOs were taken by others so i started looking for names no one would normally take, As i was reading Curse of the Mistwraith at the time the series has it's own listing of the cast and there names along with their meanings i decided to take a name from that list
I got my name form the root meaning part.

s'FFALENN family name for the royal line appointed by the Fellowship Sorcerers in Third Age Year One to rule the High Kingdom of Rathain.
Gifted geas: compassion,'empathy.
pronounced: s-fal-en
root meaning: ffael - dark; an - one

I've been using mine for years now, don't remember exactly from what year though. It had actually changed from another handle I used to use a while back called "Draghkar" which was the last name of a particular family/clan in a fantasy novel I was trying to write when bored at class one day based on my free-form RP storyline.

Although apparently that is a rather popular one as I started seeing it pop up everywhere so I changed it, and the name in my story/rp setting, to solemcleavu which according to what I have written and established as back story so far can either mean star-cleaver or soul-cleaver. Haven't really figured out what I want it to mean yet heh.

My name came when I was trying to come up with a good handle in Eve. I wanted something that sounded good for a space pilot. Aao is short for Aaosoth, which is long for Aosoth, a name I got from a stripper that turns out to be a demonic power in some modern day satanic cult. Not that I care one way or the other about the connection, but the name stuck and I shorten it when I can because it's annoying telling everyone on vent how to spell it.

I find this name looks a lot less intimidating than my ussual gamer name. That's pretty much the sole reason. Something like Jimmy might be even less but at least this name means something to me comically.
