I used to be AMD/ATI but AMD has fallen too far behind the performance scale on their CPUs. I just couldn't justify buying another after my Phenom II. I've switched to Intel and been happy with my i5-2500k @ 4.4GHz.

For the video card side, I'm still in price/performance mode. I've been very happy with my HD5850 but I'm starting to see more and more driver issues from ATI/AMD. I think I might switch to nVidia with my upgrade this time.

I used to be a fan of AMD and ATI. Then went for the Intel Q6600 CPU (OC from 2.4 to 3.2 ghz) and GTX 260. CPU wise I don't care too much, but Nvidia worked so much better than my ATI driver wise. I'm glad I never have to deal with those Catalyst drivers.

Yesterday I ordered a GTX 670 - 4GB as an upgrade from my GTX 260.

Last week my friend got the top of the line ATI card and it almost chaught fire (litteraly) when he maxed out Witcher 2. So, he returned it and is instead getting a GTX 680 - 4GB. I'm glad the ATI showed it's true colors so early, he dodged a bullet there.

I really like CPUs because of how much they help the computer.

I agree with 100% i took my out to punish it and the computer just sat there.

You're kidding me right? I realize that since you're running a 260, you haven't experienced the "joy" of Fermi, but Nvidia's last two generations were not only massively more power hungry and hot running than their AMD counterparts, to the point that the 480 consumed almost half again as much as its AMD counterpart, but they were some of the worst cards ever in this regard. Here is a list of modern cards by power consumption; do you note that the 480 is literally worse than any other single GPU card? It's the same story on load temps. The 590 traded off the 480's abysmal performance per watt though, so it's okay; they just began exploding on reviewers (the mosfets, anyways). So much for Nvidia lacking driver issues.

Also, THe 7970 runs as cool or cooler than the 680 (http://www.guru3d.co...x-680-review/10), so while his real problem was the particular game he was playing, which is notorious for those issues, the 680 is no better on heat than the card he just ditched. I hope you told your friend he was "upgrading" to something with the exact same temperature characteristics to solve temperature problems.

I'll buy what I need and/or which gives me the best bang for the buck.

Right now that would be an Intel CPU and an AMD GPU. Back when Nvidia released the 680 at the same price point as AMDs 7970 I would have chosen the Nvidia card. But since then, the price for the Nvidia Card remained high while the AMD GPUs droped considerably, so AMD is back on the spot.

But, that is all theoretical, as my more then two year old system (AMD CPU and GPU) is still capable of running each and every game on the market on maximum details. Therefor I see no reason to upgrade it anytime soon.
