Considering the levels of routine discrimination and vilification that are displayed toward anybody with a WoL sig, I'm not understanding this victim complex that people seem to have regarding us.

We mess around and have fun with the game here or there but I hardly think that's grounds for the kind of behavior demonstrated toward us at large. Ever consider that somebody who knows enough about the game to make fun of Romano Liao or whatever can probably do that because they're enough of a fan to know BT lore? Last I checked Battletech lore isn't exactly common knowledge. It's obscure nerd crap that we happen to enjoy but we're aware of how nerdy it all is and can poke fun at it.

I think the vast majority of us just want to shoot lasers at Internet robots and have fun not desecrate the precious sanctity of an 80s boardgame.

I've read the entire first page.

What the hell is this thread about?
It's about how that fine gentleman George Ledoux (who singlehandedly redeemed Mechwarrior 4's existance because he made Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries just that ***-****** awesome all by himself) embarked upon an ingenious scheme to make goons love him even more and ensure that at least one goon (me) will probably not shoot at him. Unless it's really funny.

Well played, well played indeed.

If you saw me on the battlefield and we weren't team mates or allies and you DIDN'T shoot me, then I would feel unloved and scorned. A worthless pubbie, not even worth the few C-bills it took to purchase the special Easter Egg - "Development Team Only" indestructible metagame mech... The Urbie UM-2500. And if you saw me in an Urbie and didn't shoot me, even if it would be really funny, then you would have to answer to your wretched, internet-robot-fun spoiling, cult-like brethren as to why you let me get away unscathed.
I don't want to see anyone go through such an internet scolding so please... if you see me, shoot me. We'll both sleep better that night....

Never. I can't live the button-down life like you. I want it all: the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles. Sure, I might offend a few of the bluenoses with my cocky stride and musky odors - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'house leaders' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about "What's to be done with this Lowtax?"

The proletariat should not ignore peaceful methods of struggle — they serve its ordinary, day-to-day interests, they are necessary in periods of preparation for revolution — but it must never forget that in certain conditions the class struggle assumes the form of armed conflict and civil war; there are times when the interests of the proletariat call for ruthless extermination of its enemies in open armed clashes. This was first demonstrated by the Davion proletariat in the Commune and brilliantly confirmed by the Cappellan proletariat in the December uprising.

God there's so much about the internet I don't know..
I've been seeing "Lowtax" everywhere and until now I thought was a Sarah Palin/Tea-party thing.. :D

Goons I totally get, and actually I think it's a damn funny concept; Get a whole bunch of guys in their starter ships to simply swarm Eve Online - It's like Enemy at the Gates style; When the man in front of you dies take his rifle & overrun them through sheer weight of numbers & everyone who dies as cannon fodder hasn't lost anything of value - It's a genius stroke but can't work in MWO due to the way the game works so isn't worth worrying about let alone arguing over.

As to the whole being a bird thing, ok that's a little odd but canonically, I don't try and rationalise anything real-live opponents do in-game anyway so it can't bother me.
In-game all you're gonna see is a big-bad mech, not a big-bird so why get upset about it?

No one needs to role-play (in my circles that word is only ever used in the kinky sense anyway, nothing to do with computer games) if they don't want to so how can it possibly upset you if the guy from across the world that you're shooting at is pretending to be a bird at his computer; It won't affect you so just let those guys be happy & do their thing.

Damn, maybe I'm just getting too mellow.. Better go shoot some baddies in a computer game! :)

It affects the community. Which is a pretty important part of online games. The frustration is that these people are invading this community and making it hard for the people who really like this series to properly interact with each other. And due to how many people seem to be in on this it's very likely that they actually will ruin the community.

I mean, everyone keeps saying "just ignore them and they'll leave". But in reality if you leave then they win. That's when they finally take over, and this community becomes their's. At least when you speak out against them you're making your presence known. That not everyone has given up.

Dear Nuclear Xmas,
Grow up.

You just suggested that people "speak out" against a group you don't like. That is all we are, a group of people you don't like. That is not something you speak out against, that is something you grow up and learn to live with.

You speak out against slavery. You speak out against discrimination. You speak out against violence. You speak out against injustice.

To use that sort of rhetoric, about a group of people who contribute in a way you don't appreciate, is bordering on offensive.

So, I return to my initial advice: Grow up.

If you insist on labeling us as outsiders in this community because we don't adhere to whatever arbitrary guidelines you make up then we're going to be the least of your problems when this game launches. This community will be inundated with people that just want to play a game and have fun, and they aren't going to give a damn about the Battletech fluff no matter how many times you meekly post a link to sarna.net. Are you going to ostracize them as well because they don't fit into the mold you have for the perfect Mechwarrior?

Having this mindset does more to poison the community than a handful of forum users posting about bird aliens and quotes from communist manifestos.

It ultimately depends on how Community Warfare (lolololol) is going to be implemented, does it not?

We goons have a saying. It's origin is lost to time, but we all know what it means. It's such a fundamental part of our being that uttering it "back home" brings swift and just retribution on your head.

"Vote 1 and move on".

Since voting 1 isn't possible over here (yet, hint hint) you're just left with the second part of the adage, which holds true across these here internets. Take it to heart and possibly, just possibly, you will begin to know the enemy you have chosen.

I think people are more concerned about the "Goons and the EvE Legacy" stuff. There was alot of emotional investment in Eve as people had been playing it for so bloody long that being rolled by a bunch of what ever you did there drove them batty.

The only things I would say annoy people are the denegration aspects of a minority of the posts by Goon members(why do you care if people don't like you or think you're silly? Don't pretend you don't because you always bite when people bait you) or the assumptions of total superiority when no one knows how the meta-game will be implemented.

As a side note; if you're a Goon member, or a member of any other 'faction' that requires payment to join for that matter, be careful about your conduct with regard to behavior that could be construded as economically anti-compedative. Sounds absurd but there are laws on the Australian books that can see you charged for being a member of anything arbitratily dubbed as a 'criminal organization'. This may sound foolish and infalmatory but it really isn't; the anti-association laws are aggressive and have an amazingly broad scope. They have not been tested with online only interaction but anyone with half a brain can see how bat **** crazy Australian magistrates can be sometimes: an intellectually disabled man was recently gaoled for walking to the shops with two childhood friends who had criminal records, due to the aforementioned anti-association laws.
