I'm new, so I'm probably totally off base, but I'll press forward like a noob.
This is an idea to allow group of irregular size to play in Quicks or CW. Matches would be limited by number of drop ships and weight per drop ship. For example, 2 100lbs mechs could drop against 4 50lbs mechs.
I'm not sure how well the balance works by weight but it would allow a group of 5 to play against a group of 4. And more specifically it would allow smaller organized groups to play organized without getting put against a 12 stack.
Also, in CW, a "recon" drop of one ship PUG will encourage more communication between players as there are far fewer players. Then a group that is having fun with one drop ship could join a second drop ship and form a bigger group and go for bigger targets. It creates an organic way for organized groups to form and grow rather than getting tossed into 12-man, staying quiet, and having a terrible time.

Matches By Weight, Not Player Count.

Nope. PGI has balanced the game to make mechs of varying tonnage have similar overall performance. 4 50 tonners should be able to tear apart 2 100 tonners 80-90% of the time.

Well then, that won't work at all.
Maybe 1, 2, and 3 Lance games then. Bound to factors of 4, but at least it creates smaller games for smaller units and more opportunities for players to communicate. Queue up for a PUG would be to join a lance and those 4 players would pick mechs and drop together in multiple 1, 2, or 3 lance battles.
