Poll: How should flamers work? (15 member(s) have cast votes)

Do you feel Flamers are in a bad spot?

  1. Yes (13 votes [86.67%])

    Percentage of vote: 86.67%

  2. No (1 votes [6.67%])

    Percentage of vote: 6.67%

  3. No Opinion (1 votes [6.67%])

    Percentage of vote: 6.67%

How do you feel flamers should work?

  1. All other attributes stay the same, but the flamer ventilates heat onto other Mechs instead of incurring more heat. The hotter the mech, the more heat transferred. (1 votes [6.67%])

    Percentage of vote: 6.67%

  2. Flamers cook enemy internals, but retain the same DPS. (2 votes [13.33%])

    Percentage of vote: 13.33%

  3. Flamers gain improved criticals on exposed components. All other attributes remain the same. (0 votes [0.00%])

    Percentage of vote: 0.00%

  4. Flamer heat generation on target ramped up substantially. Self heat generation remains the same. (12 votes [80.00%])

    Percentage of vote: 80.00%

  5. Flamer damage increased to the point that it deals 2 DPS. (0 votes [0.00%])

  6. Flamer remains throwaway seller fodder and not useful. (0 votes [0.00%])

Flamers, in my honest opinion, are quite bad, and really have no role in the game other than being flashy blinders that cook your mech.

They incur more heat on your mech than the enemy mech.

They don't perform well at any particular thing.

People should post their suggestions or links to their suggestion threads if they feel strongly about this issue.

This thread has been created numerous times on numerous occasions by numerous other members of our community. I don't expect my suggestions to be exhaustive, as there are other thoughts on the matter.

Change it to napalm. Burn down the forest. Melt all the ice under a mech so it auto refreezes around their legs. It could have uses if it were programmed to do more utility.

That's some pretty complex stuff to program in for just one weapon, but it would be nice to have.

Far Cry 2's fire system was neat. I just don't see that particular change expanding its utility on some of the maps (namely all the stony or inorganic maps) unless it were implemented alongside some other things.

The important question of the flamer is: What is the true spirit and purpose of the Flamer?

The Flamer is supposed to be the weapon that applies heat instead of damage.

If it's not effective, just increase the heat it applies to the target, job done.

My suggestion:
-- Make all flamers 1 ton heavier. (IS Flamer = 2 tons, CLAN Flamer = 1.5 tons) The extra weight would be to prevent those crazy light mech Flame-spam builds.
-- Make all flamers apply more heat to the target, at least triple what they apply currently. The point of a flamer is heat, not damage.
-- Make it cause zero damage. It's fire, not bullets. When the target mech overheats, then it's own heat will damage it's own internals; This mechanism is already in place and would require no rework whatsoever.

Easy fix.

The extra 'heat power' and weight would make selection of the flamer a more strategic choice, rather than it being something you throw into a spare hardpoint, or something you need 4 of to be effective.

I think it should apply damage, but only to internals and that is if armor is stripped. Applying heat to your target was the intended function of the flamer but cooking internals is secondary. I think triple would be somewhat broken, instead, double it and test it from there.

Lights with a couple of flamers being actual support and causing laser boats to overheat constantly would be nice to see and might open up a variety of different builds to counter this.
