Noticed the Gauss does 5 less than the A/C20. Why is that? With the way the Gauss fires your rate of fire is low...and you need more skill to use... AC20 I know is a shorter range but figured gauss would be the damage daddy for ballistics. It's the only weapon I have noticed so far that requires manual labor to operate. New to this mwo version so was curious... Not complaining. I like both...once in a while ill slap 2 gauss on my crab so I can eat pizza and play at the same time.

Less heat, no ghost heat, much more range, much higher projectile speed, less Crit-slots.
AC20 is good, but, in my opinion, the Gauss rifle is the best ballistic weapon (even after the cooldown nerf)

You've pretty much identified the reason why. Range basically.
The exotic firing mechanic for gauss is only in due to people whining about players grouping it with ppcs and sniping.

A.) Most of the stats in BattleTech are bass-ackwards, but even more so in MWO because they took what were supposed to be accuracy penalties and turned them into damage fall-off points
B.) Without the charge, Gauss is a better close-quarters weapon than the AC/20. Without that recently added extra cooldown time, it was still a better close-quarters weapon than the AC/20; this is because it generates no noteworthy heat and has very little projectile travel time
C.) The AC/20 is crap at long range; not only does more damage help lessen the impact when firing beyond optimum range since it gives you more margin to fall off, it's also silly to make the weapon with the highest damage also have the longest range from a game mechanics perspective...unless it carries some equitable drawbacks. Arguably, the Gauss does finally have some equitable drawbacks.
