I'm new to MWO but have been thoroughly enjoying it. I'm a huge fan of armoured vehicles and have thousands of logged hours in over 30,000 games in World of Tanks, which I have been playing since 2011. I can't quite put my finger on why I feel like MWO is a superior game to WoT but here are a few of my ideas. I know it is comparing apples to oranges but I need to get this off my chest.
1. RNG ruins gaming and ruins lives
One of the most frustrating aspects of WOT is the complicated damage system. So many random number generating dice rolls happen to prevent your shots from doing anything. First you roll to see if your gun actually fires where your crosshairs are aimed, second a dice roll happens to see if your shot penetrates enemy armor and then another dice roll happens to see how much damage is inflicted. Mechwarrior is so refreshing because it bypasses all that B.S. and if you miss its because your aim sucks and you need to LRN2AIM.
2. No mindless grinding
I have less than 1000 games played so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like you can just purchase any Mech you want. In World of Tanks you have to grind 9 tiers of useless vehicles to get to tanks that are viable in Clan Wars. In MWO there seems to be a pilot skill aspect to the game but otherwise everyone is on the same tier of Mechs whether they are light, med, hvy or assault. You can just pick the ones you want and get them instantly (if you have the credits).
3. MWO spotting mechanics are realistic
In the fantasy setting of WoT you cannot see your enemies at all until they are spotted. They are just completely invisible and it is like they do not exist. In MWO you can see enemies thousands of metres away if you have sharp eyesight and could actually hit them if you have weapons that can reach that far.. even if they are not targeted by your weapon systems. It just makes so much sense its hard to go back to WoT after seeing what is actually possible.
4. Reasonable artillery
MWO handles artillery in a very nice way. You can outfit your Mech with Long Range Missiles and blast enemies that are lit by your team from the safety of the back lines but your missiles do reasonable amounts of damage and chip away at enemy armor and HP. In the World of Tanks tier 10 arty can completely one shot an enemy tank from full health if a lucky shot scores a penetrating direct hit. Being hit by a barrage of missiles in MWO isn't fun but is nothing like being completely obliterated by a talentless newb across the entire map like in World of Tanks. The airstrikes that happen in MWO are still mysterious to me, but they haven't been an issue.
5. MWO maps are better
Although the same choke points seem to be used over and over again, the map variation and change in daylight used by MWO is another breath of fresh air. Maybe its because I've played over 30k games but the WoT maps are stale and stagnant. Instead of bringing out new maps every patch Wargaming.net actually retracts and removes maps from circulation and it is unacceptable. I like the voting system in MWO and it's nice to pick your map. The largest maps in WoT are only 1,000m squared which is such a tiny combat arena.. and they are all square shaped maps. The large, unsymetrical maps in MWO seem organic, lively and unpredictable.
*6. Entertaining brawl-fests
It doesn't happen every game but it occurs much more frequently than it does in WoT: that moment when your team brunt force crashes into the enemy position and 24 mechs are brawling toe to toe for a furious few minutes. I've found my self grinning ear-to-ear at the intense carnage and it is what realtime player-vs-player MMO's are all about. In random public matches WoT generally consists of terrified mouth-breathers hiding the entire match and trying to CHAI-snipe their way to victory. These types of confrontations is the reason why I play.
*point added after a bit of thought
Conclusion
I've tried Warthunder ground forces and although it is very realistic it didn't capture my imagination. Some of my friends are currently playing Armored Warfare but I haven't tried it yet. I've purchased the Wolverine and Quickdraw bundle for MWO and am enjoying it very much.
If you have other suggestions or considerations please share with me, I am gathering my thoughts to produce a video about this subject for my YouTube channel, Aficionado & Friends.
