New players in CW, the single best piece of advice I can give you

Use your faction chat.
If you get anything other than friendly help, consider switching factions.
Period

Those "evil units" that you hear some chatter on about here on the forums almost always have some players active in the chat and they'll be willing to help you out.
If you see someone being a dbag to new players in the faction chat report them. If they are wearing tags, IE I have RMA tags, in front of their name, come ask on the forums which unit that is and explain why you're asking.

I promise you that anyone in the bigger units that we've organized in Marik are doing that we'll do our best to make sure it stops and at the very least we can make sure they don't represent us while doing it. Most of the bigger faction units are going to operate in similar fashion because we want our faction, units, and MWO to grow.

Seriously, use your faction chat and it will help immensely :) I would also suggest posting in your chosen faction's sub-forums here as well. You'll be able to find out when that faction's prime times to play are and get website and TS information as well.

P.S.
PGI, your CW interface is next to impossible to decipher without a lot of help. You really need to work on the social tools and making the map easy to understand in regards to the attack and defend queues and how they work.

I hope you selected a short contract.

Indeed I did, 7 day one.

*edit* could it have been a ceasefire window?

No, I don't know what the ceasefire is or why it's there, but it was on for maybe a minute and a half in the beginning. Maybe it was that ending that didn't update for me properly.

I guess I can do a faq page on little nuggets of CW info

Your guide was good, had my window looked like it should I would've understood it pretty well. I just assumed you had skipped a step that I just wasn't seeing or understanding. The thing to add, if anything, would be Sjorpha's qoute below.

But you also sometimes need to restart the game after taking on a new contract in order to make it work, and in some other situations as well.

I did, in retrospect it was right on the money. But every time I asked they mentioned red and blue, and I saw non of it. After telling them that I saw no red or blue planets (they must've thought I was blind AND stupid) they directed me to the forums.

I'd also like to add to your postscript: PGI, tell players that the faction they choose will decide which mech's they can use. It'd fit nicely along with the warning about severe penalties for breaking the contract. The extra info page of the different factions did mention 'Special conditions', but I assumed that was just the lore talking.
