I think having good map awareness is a legitimately hard skill to master. You have to really work at staying on top of whats going on around the map especially when the fighting is intense. It's something I am always struggling to get better at.

A lot of people think they have good map awareness, but they are often just as myopic as their teammates. Often times there are fights going on in two places. Everyone sees the mechs in front of them, but no one notices the enemy mechs that are tying up their other teammates. Then they yell at each other for goofing off and not helping them.

The better your map awareness, the fewer problems you get into. Perfect map awareness would mean you never have those "Oh sh*t, WHY IS MY TEAM OVER THERE!?" moments.

I'm now afraid of Invisible Butt Doritos, the best-worst thing to come from this thread.

Especially if they're made with olestra.

Keep in mind, you can turn off all the chat and VoiP functionality in this game, and play in your own safe little bubble. So basically, you can safely assume some of your team in any given game is completely cut off from your communications by their own choosing. In other words, they have made a deliberate choice to limit their ability to work with a team.

Playing a PUG game as a good player is largely a matter of staying on the outside of the battle till some positions are actually set, and some enemies distracted. Sometimes that means you're the last one left against 12 OPFOR, and end up looking like a bag of roosters, but at least it gives you a decent chance at earning your c-bills. Personally, unless I can get active communication (and a team-oriented demeanour) from at least five other pubbies on my drop, I won't take risks for the team. It's a bummer having to play conservatively, even cowardly, in the solo queue, but one works with what one is given, and sometimes that must be enough.

I hate it how someone will throw up a UAV, reveal the entire enemy team. But then as soon as the UAV goes down every just forgets that there's 10 mechs in B4, and chase after the locust because it's the only thing spotted - before getting their rears torn about by those same 10 mechs

Hell, 90% of the population show no real life awareness, so this isn't surprising.

Do you realise less than 50% of people on steam has actually completed the FIRST tutorial?

I'm not surprised when I see more than a few idiots who grouped Gauss, LRM and medium lasers in one firing group - probably didn't know you can regroup them in lab or in-game after changing the load out.

I've had a similar experience on Polar Highlands. I was in an ACH (man, I hate those mechs) spotting the enemy team. I had eyes on their Assault Lance for most of the game.

Despite my team knowing exactly where these Assaults were, they continued to chase the enemy medium lance up the gully they were in. Best part was, at the end of the match, some of the guys were complaining about how they got destroyed by ALL THE LRM BOATS!

Yep. All of those ONE Highlander IIC with two LRM 20s. That I had highlighted for most of the game. No other LRM mechs (I was watching for trails to find some ACH food). Just a single HGN-IIC.

So. Bring a Catapult in Polar, fire from two different locations, and you'll have the enemy team in a frothing rage about ALL TEH LURMZBOATZ!

To be fair, people who were playing long before the Steam release and linked the game to their profiles already got most of those achievements, and they wouldn't pop on their profiles. I'm sure there are plenty of players who canceled out of the tutorial because "I wanna play the real game", but achievement stats aren't accurate representations of who did what.

I couldn't deal with it any more, so I started playing lights. Let me tell you, a decently skilled player can turn the entire tide of a battle by playing in to these issues you're talking about and forcing it on the enemy team instead.

I'm now hovering on a 3.0 k/d and a 2.0 match victory because I do exactly as you describe. I kill one or two slow movers on their back line, force their entire team to turn (or not), and bait them away if possible. If they don't turn, it's just free kills. Then I do a big circle and help the team clean up.

The cbills alone are worth it, much more than I've ever made playing a heavy meta derp.

It's all about mentality. You've adapted and are reaping the rewards.

Most others just go "NOPE! YOU TOOK AWAY MY PULSE LASERS!!!! NOPE! HATE LRMS! MAP IS BAD! I'M USING CAPS BECAUSE I AM YELLING AT MY COMPUTER!!! SHUTUP GRANDMA!!!".

I notice a lot are blaming Steam. Fact is, it's not a Steam issue. I see it prevalent any time of day with players near the same Tier as me. In games just like this.

Getting a bit tired of trying to level mechs and doing more damage and match score than a whole heavy lance combined. Pay attention to the map people. Move with the group. Stop chasing one light with your heavy mech while being cored from behind because you didn't look behind you.
