so you mean...it feels more like the "war" part of a wargame than the "game" part?

Seems about as silly as those whiny baseball whiners and their "unwritten rules".

It's a war game. The NARC itself is slow as crap, counterable, and require multiple teammates focusing on your same target to be remotely effective. Even then it's only really useful on a handful of maps, and mostly, against slow or dumb targets.

And you can't even know if you are going to get one of the few maps before you equip it. Or, unless your team brings LRMs, if there will even be anyone on your team to take advantage of it.

At that point, you still have to maneuver to 450m (600 for clan) and get a shot with a laughably slow nerf ball, that can be defeated at range by AMS.

Sorry if I feel the QQ is just a teensy bit out of proportion with the reality.

It's like the guy who brings a small laser Executioner crying because the other guy brought a GuassJager to Alpine.

That ECM light mech with NARC has already dedicated a minimum of 4 tons (IS) or 3 tons (CL) to bring a weapon system that doesn't itself cause damage (Roughly 10% of their available tonnage). Then they were able to encircle your entire team and position themselves in a way to hit you with a slow moving narc beacon (500 Velocity). Then hope the rest of their team brought enough LRM's for that NARC to actually matter.

What you'll find with teams like SJR is, if they cant stack the deck in their favor to win, they cry, ***** and moan about it.
Polar Highlands doesnt allow them to just no skill deathball nascar everything down like almost every other map does, so their chances of winning is substantially less. So no surprise they have started to complain about it.

I don't see SJR do this often. I do see a few select members of SJR do so, just like any Tryhard. If it ain't click a pixel, then it is an insult to their pure unadulterated skill. But as comp teams go, I generally find SJR significantly less butthurt than most.

It's not really the comps. Well... most comps I suspect. it's the tryhards who want to make this game the esport equivalent of bowling.

Nope, most of us are just mocking the TRVE KOMPS who promote the one true way.... and can't handle any form of change. If you don't fall into that category, don't feel the derision is aimed at you.

They always try to stack the deck in their favor. A perfect example is the rules they created in RHoD to cater to their brawling playstyle. Any ranged playstyle they did their best to neuter.

The same goes for the NGNG boys. I remember when clan mechs came out and CSJ absolutely ***** them using the clan ERLL on Crimson and Sean Lang was crying a river on Twitch. Then they give their "advice" to PGI, because for whatever reason PGI seems to think their opinions matter and the next thing we know clan ERLL are nerfed into the ground.

The simple fact is these "comp teams" think that erll are not a legitimate playstyle and should be nerfed in favor of the brawling nascar meta, which quite frankly is a joke.

There is a good reason for that, in fairness: When you get focus laservomited to death, you can self reflect and say 'that was MY fault. I crested that ridge when i shouldn't have' and knowing you could have done something differently helps. If you get an ECM light sneak up and NARC you from 600m away when you never saw them, and then get rekt by LRMs you could never see the firers of, and you never exposed yourself once.. you feel more like "wtf thats totally unfair, there was nothing i could have done differently"

Disclaimer: i LOVE the new map, and i have no problem with LRMs being actually effective on a map. I still wont bring AMS, because on 90% of maps its 100% a waste of tonnage, so ill take my knocks on Polar if i have to.

Couple of "errors" in there sorry. NARC is 450m (+mods) max range and if a Light sneaks up on you, assuming from behind, they certainly don't need be a ECM carrier and Yes, tyhat is on you... every time.

Try not standing around in the same place for so long and keep an eye out for Flanking Light Mechs, it is what they do... Posted Image

Omg, so now NARC is the new META!?!?!?!?!?

Really people? Have you ever actually used it? Let me count the ways.

Its slower than an ac20 on(I think) even the uberquirked narc mechs.

Its VERY heavy for its function.

Shutting down DOES remove your dorito. People don't know this because narc has NEVER BEEN AN ISSUE BEFORE!!!!!

AMS is STILL a counter to missiles even when narced.

Many buildings that are still a hard counter to your hated indirect fire.

The game gives you the tools to deal with a rare problem and you refuse to use them because the problem is so rare, then want o kick a puppy because you got hurt by it?

Jesus where's my free tonnage module and my 1 to 1.5 ton equip to negate 1/2 of the laser spam directed at me?

Yes, that's part of being comp. What I am saying is I seldom find them (compared to other more vocal units) getting all salty and crying about it. In my experience. YMMV. But I'd rather deal with SJR or 228 on the whole than most of the comp teams out there, or some of the more notable MS whiners.

I'm serious. Everyone is saying that there are counters, but no-one cares to tell them, or the ones that get thrown around are unreliable or not appliable to PUG play.

well, C-NARC gets 600 m. And my lovely NARCTurtle gets NACR range 5, to go with my dual NARC launchers. But being an Adder, no ECM, no speed, no JJs.

I've been using NARC+LRMs in a few mechs (or just NARC on lights). You NARC a target, he hides, and has to hide until NARC expires or an ECM mech comes to rescue him. Alternatively he gets showered in DPS.
Strongest weapon ever? Nope. But sure can force a mech to "skip a turn", and that can help your team a lot.
This is my opinion, it can be wrong, whatever, it's not my point.
My point, as i stated before, is just asking one question: how do you counter being NARCed on Hoth?
Edit: if there is no counter, i belive there is a problem. That's it.

OK here it is. Match starts, have a look around as the Group moves and forms up. If you see an ECM Mech (prefer slower) and fear the Narc that much, stay near said ECM Mech. If by some stretch you get away from said ECM Mech and then get Narc'd, bee-line to said ECM Mech immediately.

Here is the real secret to it.

If it takes you longer to get to said ECM Mech than it takes the Missiles headed your way to kill/cripple you, you were seriously out of position and are simply being punished for that mistake.

Updated. Forgot about Mods and one would have to very "dedicated" to the NARC to use precious slots just to enhance it... Posted Image

well, to be particularly useful, you can't pack a whole lot else with your NARC. Especially since to be be effective with NARC, you want to avoid firing weapons that will draw attention to you.

A good NARCNinja only has weapons for self defense when he get's flushed, or to join the fight after he runs out of Pods.

I've been NARCing since long before it "was cool" and I still laugh at how many NARCers give up their position by TAGing also. NARCs are silent, with minimal effects to follow back to the mech. It's why I like my ADDER for it... even without ECM, I just need to expose a tiny portion of my turtle shell, and POP! Then silently move on and POP! again. I run dual NARC on it, so I can lay down several faster, or in case of NARC Light mechs, because they are easy to miss with a 500 m/s weapon, so having an immediate second shot helps more than having firepower to reveal yourself with.

And after I am out of Pods? Got 2 nice ERLL to retire to range and snipe with.

Might make a Cheetah variant around this.

Where did any of you read that Gman said anything about being frustrated about his meta style not working? He clearly mentions that laser spamming mechs with high mounts (aka: the meta) is brutally effective on this map.

That sounds pretty much like the opposite of the, "Haha, comp player mad because his meta doesn't work on the map," idea that oh so many of you were quick to (inaccurately) correlate.

Quote

My last issue in terms of weapons has more to do with mounts. The gentle slopes of the map lend themselves absurdly well to those high-mounted laser vomit damage machines. You know, the already-best mechs in the game?

There we go.

The same could well be true of the higher tiers. They have developed an effective fighting style, such as nascar, poking, deathballing. If those tactics are not the right ones they complain that it is the maps fault.

This hits the truth exactly in the center. Polar Highlands has different tactics. Flanking is easier and deadlier. A lance splitting off the main deathball, moving in the trenches to another location and flanking the enemy firing line in a classic, Napoleonic fashion is deadly.

Or the map turning into a kind of running trench battle of snipers and artillery, and the team that fails crossing no-man's land usually is the loser.

Its like no other map we have, it calls for doing things differently, it breaks the static mode we've been playing for a while.

And for that, I like Polar Highlands.

This thread has more baggage than Samsonite.

A little more hard cover would make it perfect imo.
