This is a condensed 20 minute summary of the 4 hour Town Hall meeting with Russ Bullock.



Topics covered:

Coming February 16th Patch:

4 new maps for private match only - Premium required - "Solaris" competitive play

Rifleman release

Clan targeting computers are getting a buff - "fairly significantly better"

MASC has been buffed - in some cases 2x - Shadowcat and Executioner

Quirks - Most focus was on Clan "dogs", Also Clan negative quirks are being removed, Blackjacks getting a balance pass, Inner sphere energy range quirks reduction

Flamer is getting a new graphical effect update - wooohooo!

Ability to remap the spectator controls

Stalker Mechlab retro-fit

Caustic Valley pass removing some obstacles that impede movement

Other Townhall Notes:

Classic Mech Pack - Kodiak (100 Ton) with the first Clan Hero Mech (Clan Ghost Bear yay!) Hero will likely be a MASC build

Community Warfare Phase III:

Content should be complete Late Feb
Prob not March, more like April 19th (80 to 90pct likelyhood)

Russ: No matter how much they try, there is no way to intermix group players with solo players without unbalancing the match

Approx 10% of the player population plays CW

According to Russ: "We need to try and separate the queues and see if it works"

- solo queues are players with no unit tag and no groups are allowed, also freelancers (freelancers can drop on any side for any faction for a single battle contract) - unit queue organized groups go into the group queue as well as tagged players, one man merc units with a tag count - there will be no PSR matchmaking for CW

New MC rewards system - An amount of MC per planet per battle window, and a lifespan to how long a planet earns MC - For example 1MC per planet - 3 windows x 1 = 3MC per planet per day - Unit leader can assign the MC to the members in any way he sees fit - if unit switches faction Planet income is lost

Total number of planets being contested should be 10 or under - every faction will vote who they are at war with - there will be a single planet under contested for each faction that declares war - this should consolidate players into battle queues

Cost of recruiting will grow as a unit gets bigger - this is designed to dis-incentivize the zerg units, will also prevent gaming system by dropping unit tags and re-tagging

Rescaling mechs is a huge job =p 1 full work day per mech, full retexture and animations for just a 1% scale change
Half the mechs in the game need rescaling
Quirks will have to be revisited - For example 82% global volume shrinkage on the Nova
Catapult getting a full remodel
March April time frame for first mechs, changes released a few a time

Website coming for team sign ups for the pro-gaming competition, leaning towards 8v8 matches

PGI is now working on a single player MechWarrior game

Some stuff about Oculus Rift - Basically have to redo the whole game

March - Changes to conquest game mode, new game mode Domination / King of the Hill, Assault game mode is going to have full blown bases on each side

April'ish new map - Public Queue - Grim Portico theme

PGI has its own custom anti-cheat program made in house

Pilot Skill Tiers - In pub queues (Quickplay) - max two tier difference - to reach tier one you have to keep your match score above a particular threshhold

The rescaling I find interesting. There is some feature of how the mesh components are bonded to the bones and the texture maps that means they can't just apply a simple scaling factor, and that they have to completely remap the texture mesh coords every time they make changes to the mesh.

I'm really struggling to understand why it is so difficult in MWO, when it has been so easy in every other skeletal animation system I ever worked on. I wish the engine was more open to 3rd party busybodies to poke around.

Single Player Mechwarrior game? They are actually working on a single player game with an actual campaign? Not just a single player "fight the waves of bots" sort of thing?

Succession War era, please! MW2: Mercenaries style where you can choose to fight for anyone, not just the bloody FedRats, please!

I may be slightly excited by the prospect of this. Slightly. I'll be in my bunk.

pgi hasn't the resources to fix the problems with mwo. Yet we will get a single player game. We will have to pay for it + mwo will completely stall in it's development.

1 day per mech, so wouldn't this mena Nova revamp is finished now since it was started already a few weeks ago?

And oh my clan quirks removed so that the meta clanners get more meta and chassis imbalance amongst clanners even widens? Now I am curious how they wanna catch up the baddy chassis.

No news about decals?

I would submit that development of the game has been slowed considerably by CW phase 3. So any big addition is going to slow things elsewhere.

By this logic they should make no major additions to the game because they have other things to work out at the same time.

major part about this is designing a story, and making maps. the mechs and values are still existent. Thats not what ressources the most issues MWO has would come from. Which is mostly coding wise. However making a proper AI would need some more intense coding.

Great video and the all female crew thing was funny. :)

The last podcast was great with many many much needed improvements. But nothing that was really exciting for me at least.

When is player pilot character creation being added. 1st person mech bay and the NPC leaders of the factions. Things like that.

Immersive comm wheel communications in match
Pilot eject animation
NPC tanks on the field
Another 20 items.

About half of what was said in this townhall is what I had hoped for, and another quarter is new stuff I've never seen, and am now interested/ excited for it.

Kodiak, Solaris, MC daily rewards, new bases for assault mode, new game mode, new maps, and more content to CW....

this will be a interesting time for MWO with all the content coming.

And MASC hero Kodiak.... gunna be something to see huh?

TL;DR of that town hall was "M E D I O C R E !"

It was quite a fun town hall, highly recommend if you're interested in the future directions. Maybe keep Russ as well supplied with beer for the next one? I enjoyed listening to the whole thing in bits and pieces while riding the bus/metro/etc.
