Messenger And Notifications Widget/links Not Responding

I click on the Messenger icon (opened envelope) and Notifications icon (person in a speech bubble) and they just spin endlessly.

They don't show me my notifications or my mail.

They worked reliably for years. They stopped working a few days ago.
