But they are both 75 ton Mechs in a 12v12 game with nearly identical DropDeck sizes. They have to be balanced to within the DropDeck weight disparity %age...
Right?

Before you compare the Timberwolf to the Orion, why don't you compare the Orion to the Marauder or the Black Knight first? I mean, they're all 75 Ton IS mechs, so they should be equal right ?

Yes, equal tonnage doesn't mean equal capability.

Only played the clan mechs for the examples you've sighted, so its hard to compare.
I do play the Timberwolf heaps, and currently it does feel right (for a heavy anyways ), not sure how its going to be with the removal of the minimal negative quirks it has until it happens, and i'll have to take into account the weapon changes that may also occur.
lets wait and see, because we know threads like this are never received well by the players or PGI...

I thought maybe that notion should pass away...
No, I am not comparing ALL Sphere Mechs to Clan Mechs. Just the ones in my OP.

I don't think that's the case.
I think it's more "We all know they aren't balanced. Won't be balanced for a long time. We just need to keep this as a topic of discussion to make sure PGI does their best to get everything as balanced as they can." kind of thing.

With structure quirks its alot damned closer now.
Also if we had the rest of IS tech 2 then yes we'd be pretty damned close to IS vs Clan balanced.

It certainly does that. The question, though, is whether it outperforms every mech in it's class and if so, how can an IS dropdeck match a Clan deck with one or more in it.

With OP energy range quirks (unfortunately they want to limit it) and laser mounts as high as possible.

Against a marauder? Absolutely its balanced. The marauder tanks better than the timberwolf and carrys a ton of firepower to boot. What are you taking on your marauders?

Laser mounts as high as possible? How high is acceptable since there won't be a range advantage for either side and the speed advantage will always be on the Timber's side without great loss of durability on for the IS.

Should be at cockpit level and not more. Speed or durability should not be really matter when there is an open plain between your team and the enemy's.

Since when did the ability to reposition/maneuver, even in a ranged engagement, become a non-issue?
