I hadn't really encountered the whole BattleTech universe until I stumbled upon this via some random forum sig.

I generally prefer to play alone, even in an MMO setting, so I was curious how this whole lone wolf attitude works in terms the whole BattleTech universe, as well as what you think will be the game's take on it. From what I see at the moment, the game and background storyline seems to be very much based on groups, lances, organizations, clans, so on and so forth. A seemingly focal aproach to roles seems to be tailored for the whole teamwork aspect as well, so I was wondering whether there really is any space for such an aproach here.

Yeah, short post, but due to my lack of knowledge of the storyline/boardgame/games I can't put in any decent references ;)

As far as in-universe, it really doesn't work at all. You either signed on with a mercenary company, a house unit, or didn't fight (Died fighting by yourself).

As far as gameplay is concerned, they've said on several occasions playing by yourself will work just fine. The game will focus on teamwork, but not will not require overarching organization outside of the battle.

I think they should add 1vs1 Competition on the Solaris World.
Maybe some Scout or Hit and Run missions too for Lone Wolfs...

When I loned wolf on past games, I stood as far away from the action as possible with radar range and groups of mechs to worry about. You have to remain an outcast on the battlefield or you'll be ganged up on easily. Pretty much, the only way to lone wolf is to snipe out cockpits while (blank)meters away or wait for them to split far apart from each other. Lone wolfing will be too difficult for you if radar is the same in past games for this one. I'm hoping mwo will be different with radar by only putting you on there when they spot you.

I think (MHO) that grouping with others and joining teams is a big part of the fun.

I'd suggest finding like minded folks and teaming up with them.

Teamwork is 90% of the fun, I think. You'll be a sad lone wolf without a lance.

JMHO. Join 2AD, we're pretty laid back. Email is in the sig.

Hey I took out a whole lance on TT with a Vindicator the other night, why not try it on the PC now.

That aside, I totally understand what your saying, I would appreciate a solo option, especially due to the crazy random hours that I'm able to sit down and play. I don't care for the idea of getting shot up by a pack of douches at three AM

Solaris Seven: The arena world is perfect for lone wolf pilots. If they include Solaris Seven style arena play Lone Wolf Mech pilots will be able to find enough battle to fight to their heart's content. In MW 4 Mercs I sometimes enjoyed the solo play on the gameworld more than the campaign missions from elsewhere.

Otherwise you might get thrown into some bad groups for small unit actions, or you might find some really good teamates in pick up games. Hard to tell.

But in any combat sim your odds of survival go up with a good wingman.

Solaris7 would be great.... Solaris 7 is a world that televise the weekly Mech Fights. Most fights consist of Mech's fighting in their weight division, light, medium , heavy or assult. In one of many type of environments. The battles can be last Mech standing or last Team standing. Solaris 7 is a place where c bills are made and lost. Most Houses and Major Corporations have Stables of Mech Warriors fighting to be Grand Champion. Allot of the Independent Mech Warrior will look for sponsors to help offset the cost to compete. There Mech ends up looking like a race car with all the stickers on them. I would love to have Pyramid Beer (Pyramid Beer, is a brand that is in the Mech Warrior Universe, it was mentioned in one of the Tactical Hand books) as a sponsor.

You can do it solo, but if facing against IS players, just be prepared for everyone to focus fire on the first straggler that breaks from the main body.

I can see a lone wolf being a deep / assault recon pilot though.

Still, from an in-universe perspective, even Solaris 7 was all about teamwork of one sort or another, even if some matches were 1v1. The Stables were essentially merc units, and odds were you'd end up joining one, unless you were a billionaire playboy with sponsorships who could pay for his own mech bay and technicians to maintain his mech(s). Then you'd have your fight promoter/coordinators who do all the leg work for you so you could focus on fighting. And so on and so forth. There is a LOT of support and logistic that goes in to mech combat.

Yeah, you (the OP) can be a recon pilot, or join the Clans when they arrive. And it was actually confirmed we will be able to do 1v1,2v2,...
Devs just forgot to mention how far can we go. So you should be fine and welcome.

P.S: Have you chose a house yet? If not, then try to look at Liao, we are the best. ;)

P.P.S:
...storyline seems to be very much based on groups, lances, organizations, clans, so on and so forth...

Don't tell that to anybody, they will kill you for saying something like that. Clans are different nations, not a group of people.

Clans: Clan Wolf, Clan Smoke Jaguar, ....
Inner Sphere (us ^_^ ): Capellan Confederation - Liao, Draconis Combine - Kurita, ...
