So, any tips on maps?
I'm using a Raven 4x w/ XL Engine.
2x mPlas with LRM-5 and BAP
AMS equipped. I'm trying to spot, or occasionally rush.
I get chewed up in small maps, and murdered in maps like Crimson Strait and HPG Manifold.
Any insight from vets would be appreciated.

Uh, how about the Smurfy link for your build?
First off, that's a fairly weak loadout for a Raven. It's also disjointed, not at all range-bracketed. A single LRM-5 is pretty much useless. The pair of MPLs are cool for short-range knife fights, but then the LRM completely misses the mark backing that up. And vice-versa.
SO. First thing, I'd make sure you have the largest engine that the mech will take (XL 275, IIRC). It's not the fastest light, but it's fast. And with them big ol' chicken legs, it had BETTER be. From there, pick a range bracket. Short? MPLs and an SRM (-4 or -6) is a good call, but it's nothing spectacular mind you. Medium range? Maybe sacrifice for a pair of LPLs. Long range (and let's face it, THIS is what you want)? Twin ERLLs, just like the -3L(C). Beam duration on the 4X is reduced for all lasers by 30%. That means that it deals its full damage over a shorter time, which means less time exposed to get your damage out. GREAT for snipers. The pair of ERLLS (or LLs for medium range with better heat efficiency, though the ERLLs are plenty cool with DHS) will reach out an additional 30% of the listed range, too, as will ANY lasers on that mech. Add a cooldown module, and you're a rapid-fire long-range death sentence to anyone foolish enough to step into the open for more than a couple seconds. Things to do:
1.) ENDO, FERRO, and DOUBLE HEAT SINKS.
2.) XL 275 engine for max speed (>130 km/h, and faster than the Arctic Cheetah by a step or two)
3.) Bracket weapons together to match ranges, or a single short-range "OH CRAP!" backup
4.) max armor, except for either HEAD or LEFT ARM (your call)... 232 points total, leaves you 12.5 tons for stuff
5.) With AMS, you have 2 JJs... Without, it's 5. Your call.
4X is NOT the brawler Raven. That said, if you WANT to go short-range, then go with 2x MPL, ASRM-6, and 2x MG, and have fun! Not going to set the world on fire in that rig, but you may still have some good times.
You could also get a little derpy in it. Scale down to XL 250/255, skimp a little on armor, and plop a Gauss into that LEFT ARM.
If you INSIST on LRMs in that thing, then at LEAST go LRM-10. Of course, that's a good bit of weight to spare (more than an SRM-6) on a mech that doesn't have a lot in the first place.
Seriously, I play my -4X like a -3L(C) with JJs. Be more careful to stay at range, though, so you have time to react to LRMs better. Otherwise, that's the sweet spot for the RVN-4X, poking at range.
Spotting is cool. Don't forget to do damage while you're at it, though, because otherwise you're just kinda wasting your time on the HOPE (stressing the uncertainty of that word) that someone is going to take advantage of that spot, and far too often I've done so just to find that I've got exactly ZERO LRM tubes on my side.
Oh, and when you get there, take Seismic Sensor and Radar Deprivation mech modules FIRST for that rig, as well as a cooldown module for your primary E weapon, and an air or artillery strike and UAV.

This is the build I use competitvely in MWO:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...c5f89843dc14c4c
RVN-4X is my go-to sniper light mech.
Until quirks change thats the best build for it.
When quirks do change, by all means PM me and I'll give you a new one
(although the 2LPL build is not far behind but more challenging due to its slower speed)

Listen to the Arn0ld, he knows his stuff very well and always is a very challening opponent stealing your sunglasses, your boots and most of the time your mech too .
