What a single player game should (but probably won't) be like:
You play a young mercenary forced to take over a small merc outfit because your commander was killed by pirates and you lead a campaign to take down the pirates. Next, the 4th Succession War breaks out and through a convoluted (contrived?) storyline your merc outfit ends up working for each of the Houses of the Inner Sphere one by one, gaining prestige, 'mechs and more mercs along the way. The game has a lot of strategic planning, resource management, political maneuvering, tactics, intrigue, deal-making and some role-playing with a few of the movers and shakers of the BT universe.
After the war you're invited to fight in the Solaris 7 tournaments where you make new allies and enemies. You eventually retire rich (and a little famous) but suddenly the Clan Invasion happens and you're back at war. During the campaign you discover a cache of Star League 'mechs and use them against the Clans, culminating in the Battle of Tukayyid where you use both Star League 'mechs and Clan Busters.
6 months after the game's release, the first expansion arrives featuring another decades-long campaign, only this time you play the Clans. All of this is just for Mechwarrior 5. Mechwarrior 6 takes you to the 3060s and beyond.
*Poof* Huh? Whazzat? ****, I must've been dreaming...
