I see games where people clump up so hard only 3 people in the front are firing and taking damage from 10 other mechs.
I see games where people are spread so thin that they get mopped up.

So, without talking too specifically about other tactics, what's your opinion of the optimal distance apart from one another?

I suggest one bible mech width apart (your mech width).
You are sinning If you're making physical contact.

Proper wedge formation

and proper flanking since people think circling or "nascaring" is flanking...Its not!

You flank to where they are or were they may be. Not to where they were...

To answer your question, technically you should be shoulder to outer shoulder to avoid shooting in the back or only have your hardpoints and cockpit visible.

~30-50m out to about 90m if you are a faster mech. Should always be side by side and slightly behind the point man unless you are pushing up to let him cool down or are rounding a corner.
