I just found out when you press 'R' your target gets highlighted then you get all kinds of info like it's distance, chassis variant, damaged parts and much more.
Plus it helps your teammates locate and target him.
How come so few people know about this?

Do I have to be in a mission for this to work?
Do I type it in faction chat? Or do I have to send a friend request to my target first?
Can you please explain this cheat better? i dont understand? Do I have to press ~ to bring up console commands like in other games?
Does this work for steam players too? Or just regular client? Because I play on steam, and its not working for me! i even tried doing this during the Ready Up screen, and during map selection... Nothing! Zip! Zilch... No cheat activated!

I don't exactly know what you mean by spamming.
But I never hold locks...
...As for my teammates, if they see see one steady lock, they even might think there is only one mech, that I can handle myself, that they won't lose their advantageous position to chase one single mech (and they would be right).

I pay attention to what my Tier 1 and 2 friends do.
They hold locks.
Whether it's a pick-up game or a CW match, they press R and hold the lock. They not only want information about the targets' weapons and where it's been damaged, they want to share that info with the team.
And, if they come across a bunch of enemy mechs, they tend to lock onto one and report the rest through VOIP.

I mean no disrespect to your friends, but I prefer to pay attention to my tier 1 self.
The info is shared with my teammates, as soon as I have the info they have it too. And remember that when I have spotted a cored mech and made it my primary target, I keep the lock on it most of the time. I also call cored targets on voice com, including the letter designation, the mech model and the location of the weakness. Trust me, the info is shared.
But before being shared, the info must be collected. And if you just pick the first target you fancy and don't look at the others you will miss a lot of opportunities for effective focus and quick kills.
