Russ says MWO could be moving to a completely new engine and hasn't decided between that or the cryengine update

Some of the biggest news we've had in ages. This and the potential death of Ghost heat.

This town hall seemed to be pretty average at first, then REALLY took off.

I'd be all for something that is easier for them to modify to create a more diverse game. Graphics are great and all. But I would much rather see a more dynamic battlefield.

If it lets them unlock the Locust's legitimate engine cap according to their math system (220) and enable other fast beasties (like the Firemoth), then HUZZAH!

Yeah, this is great news for the game. I'm not super educated in the technical side of things, but I do know that the current engine has a lot of limits that make it seemingly ill-suited for a game like this. Once we get a more concrete explanation, and we know what new engine we're getting (assuming they don't just go for the cryengine upgrade) I will love to see a more technical-minded person explain the advantages.

according to the LAST townhall, its most likely cryengine 4, which is very very good for us, but we already had this discussion.

It'd be a great thing if they changed engine, since as of right now, we all know how much struggle they had from adding advanced zoom and how every single UI element in the game itself is more or less a flash element, lagging the client down. Also, netcode could reaaaaaaallllllyy use some help.

I won't cry if we drop the current engine for something better supported and easier to mod for the game.

The difference between this announcement and the previous town hall's is that the previous discussion was on the basis of simply upgrading to a new version of the current engine. Now, Russ is talking about changing to an entirely different engine, as in no longer cryengine. Apparently, it would take a similar amount of work to update the current engine as it would to get a whole new one.

'Cept from the CB pictures I've seen, MWO actually looks worse graphically now, then it used too...

Russ stated tonight that it's a huge decision and they're weighing everything very carefully, but it really sounded like they're leaning towards a new engine at the moment

Moving to Unreal would solve lots of problems and make me very happy. Better performance for sure, as CryEngine sucks up far too much juice

I think cryengine is one of the main culprits behind the glacial dev speed. PGI had very minimal training and experience with it and when it took them a year to just revamp the UI I think we all realized they were in over their head with the engine

Cryengine actually prevents us from getting a few things because of its limitations
Unreal is best option Imho

Good thing they have track record of delivering on their selling points and hype......oh wait.

Dunno about "best", but I think it would be better just for ease on PGI's abilities and skills honestly. Russ said he wants to be able to keep MWO "relevant' in regards to tech and such for 5 or more years so at least we know they're thinking in the long-term in some aspects

*shrugs* They've been a lot better over the last while then historically. I see no gain in wallowing in salt.

And to be honest, IMHO you'd have to go far out of your way to be worse than ghost heat.

And even if it is? I don't care. I just want to see Ghost Heat gone at this point. Give me something new to play with.

Regardless, I'm happy.

Better? CW phase 3 talked about about a year ago now. Truth > Salt.
