Heat Dissipation = 1.0 (normal) Heat <40% heat capacity
0.8 (80% of current) between 40 and 60% heat capacity
0.6 (60% of current) between 60 and 80% heat capacity
0.4 (40% of current) between 80% and 100% heat capacity
Numbers all just as examples! A little physically un- intuitive (shouldn't my heat dissipate faster when I'm hotter?), but provides a very simple system that allows for a cool trade off between alpha/burst damage and sustained/chain fire damage as the moment you push further up towards heat capacity you take longer (proportionally) to cool down, leading to less overall DPS. Similar to a lower heat cap but a softer and very intuitive penalty curve.
I think the main issue with this is it would mean good use of cool shots would become very powerful, but it avoids bolting in a new system and assigning new values (power draw, etc) to every weapon.
What does everyone think?
