Hi all,

I just got a new gaming laptop.

An Aftershock PC M15 v2 with the following parts:

Central Processing Unit (M-15) : Intel i7 6700HQ Processor
Graphics Card : NVIDIA Geforce GTX 950M 2GB GDDR5 Graphics
Display : 15.6" FHD Premium Matte IPS Display (1920x1080)
Memory (RAM) : 16GB DDR3L 1600MHZ (8x2)
M.2 SSD BAY (PCIE 2X/4X) : 250GB Samsung EVO 850 M.2 SSD (540MB Read / 500MB Write)
Hard Drive : 1TB 5400RPM HGST SLIM HDD
WI-FI BLUETOOTH : Intel 3165 AC WIFI+BT

When I played MWO for the first time, the fan was spinning at maximum all the way. I set the graphics at High for all. My previous laptop a 2 yr old Dell Inspirion 15 with a AMD discrete graphics card 7970 (?) does even make so much noise.

Question

1) What setting should I change to reduce the fan noise? Should I change the fan setting to start only after XX degree Celsius? What would the XX be? it is currently set to 60 degrees celsius.

2) What is a usual laptop GPU operating temp while on MWO?

2) What is the optimal graphics setting for a GTX950m for MWO? All High? or Ultra High? How do I find out what fps Im on while playing the game.

… Get some headphones: I don't think that fan would be calm for TF2.

A two gig card could run Very High Textures, but that all I can tell you. I don't know what a Skylake at 3.1GHz is good for.

Look into Throttlestop soon rather then later, but don't stop at just that …

I am actually surprised that you are satisfied with everything on high. I know MWO is more CPU dependent, but on a mobile system with a lesser GPU I didn't think the performance would be as good. Must be that Skylake i7 doing the heavy lifting. Odd that it only has DDR3 ram, though. You'd think they would have went with DDR4.

I would say the best graphics settings is whatever you can get closest to a consistent 60fps if that is possible. Search this forum for tips on setting up your user.cfg to help out with some of that. If having trouble maintaining good frame rate, set particles lower and shadows lower for the biggest improvement to fps.

As far as temperature, 60C is a good temp, but I think you would be safe up to about 70-75C. But since it is a laptop, you want everything as cool as possible, including the CPU. If you don't like the fan noise just remember it is keeping everything from melting in that tiny box and use headphones. I don't have a laptop that can play MWO, but on my desktop my custom fan curve begins at 40C, and I usually never see above 50C on my desktop. You would ideally want to be somewhere in that range, maybe a little higher. The only thing a mobile system does at higher temps is reduce power to try to lessen the heat, so having a higher threshold is not necessarily going to give you better performance.

By no means am I an expert on mobile systems, so perhaps wait until somebody more fluent in mobile units chimes in.

A mobile GTX 950 doing all high? At what kind of frame rate? Certainly not a solid 60fps at 1080p. A mobile Skylake i7 is probably good enough for high shadows and environment with medium particles.

I still think OP might even get a little more satisfaction with some user.cfg tweaking and other system tweaking in general. All high settings out of the box though? Dip city.

The fan? Get a headset and ignore the fan. The fan SHOULD be running hard, it's hard to keep laptops properly cooled, even with a nice cooling pad. Not keeping them properly cooled will reduce the lifespan of the components. I for one am not a fan of blowing $1500 every couple of years on a new laptop just because I didn't want the fan to spin up.

Thanks all for the comments and assistance.

Mebbe just to share, Im trying to keep the noise down since i play the laptop in the little time that I have in the same room as my my baby. So, yes, while I am using a headphone, the baby is quite a light sleeper. so....

So the intent is to have a playable FPS experience while not taxing the laptop too much that the fan is spinning away at full speed.

On this basis, I would like to tap on your collective wisdom on the changes to the settings re user.cfg and MWP video setting. If it helps, I play as a medium or heavy mech.

On MWO video setting, do i follow the Lenovo which has a GTX860m? Im trying to keep to a medium setting at least.
Specifically,
DX 9 or 11?
Screen Resolution 1280X700 (?)
AA - off i suppose? or FXAA? Which is the least intensive setting?
Which are the CPU intensive options? particles, textures and shadows? and I should keep it low I suppose?

Re user.cfg. Im thinking of trying out the below config from MarVCK's thread.

I got 16GB DDR3L ram running at 1600MHZ. is there something I should change below?

User.CFG settings

gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass = 0
r_DepthOfField = 0
r_HDRGrainAmount = 0.0
r_motionBlur = 0
r_MultiThreaded = 1
r_FogShadows= 0

sys_budget_streamingthroughput = 18944000
sys_LocalMemoryGeometryStreamingSpeedLimit = 18500
sys_LocalMemoryTextureStreamingSpeedLimit = 18500
sys_streaming_max_bandwidth = 18500

sys_main_CPU = 0
r_WaterUpdateThread = 0
sys_streaming_CPU = 2
sys_physics_CPU = 3
sys_TaskThread5_CPU = 3
r_Vsync = 1
sys_MaxFPS=60
sys_budget_videomem = 2048
cl_fov = 79

For throttle Stop.
So I gathered that the intent is to disable the turbo for the CPU?
So I just tick the disable turbo option?

Would appreciate your views and guidance.
Cheers!

You can increase performance, but you aren't likely to decrease the fan noise. No matter what the system is still going to heat up significantly because its a laptop. You might be able to use a utility like Afterburner or some fan control program to turn the fan down, but you'd really just be increasing the risk of lockups and other general overheating system issues.

I realize all peoples situations are different, but the obvious advice here would be to either not play around a sleeping baby or build a sound-proof subsection of the room to put the baby in (seriously, I'm joking, don't do that).

F9 will show fps and ping in a game, use DX11 to move more load from the cpu to the gpu.
there are laptop options you can change like your 'power plan, turbo, others?' that might help but i forget them because i run a desktop.look in device manager>network adapter>properties>power management , uncheck allow the computer to turn off the device.
