To shoot mechs . . .
To see their smoking wreckage piles before me . . .
And to hear the lamentation of their women . . .

Or try to get through a match alive at less than 10% health. Then someone who shall remain nameless is making a video about TAG c-bill and xp buffs and harasses you with TAG before killing you when you were minding your own buisness in an 8% health stalker. No problem I got that achievement maybe a month later in a centurion one leg, CT, head and one working ML. I was at 7% health.

Then there is liquid metal and killing 12 mechs in a match.

Most of all being a bezerking, foaming at the mouth medium LRM boat leading the charge against the other team making them scatter in fear, only to fall back a bit and chain fire LRMs at them as their fear turns to out right flight. Going 1 v4 against an assault lance and killing them due to using terrain to limit if they can even fire at you. (that is a nasty way to go. Atlases and direwolves are know for not being able to fire well up or down on hill sides.)

Just out of pure curiosity. Is there any game in existence that has meaning? Every single game I know of is just like this one. Some have harder contents at the end (MMORPG), some just have more of the same (Sims# whatever, MWO). In the end it boils down to are you having fun, yes or no?

If you are not having fun, then either find ways to have fun (for me it is dropping with unit mates in CW or competitive play vs. other organised teams). If you have tried everything there is to try and none of it is appealing enough to keep you bound, then you are always free to turn your back on the game (either permanently or just taking a break). In the end, a game is just a game, sure, the players staying want to have more like minded other players to compete with, but none of us want to force you to feel bad about yourself for needlessly grinding.

Take the game as it is, just a game to pass the time and relax, have fun with, challenge yourself vs. others. Pick the reason why you want to continue and build on that. Playing with your unit and think of it as similar to kicking a ball around on a grass field with a few mates. It has no meaning, but you are still with friends and having fun. Try other things out together with your unit mates (maybe join a league or competition and see how far you get or well you do for example).

I've played this game for a month almost every evening. While it's still very fun for me, I agree with the OP that the game has a sort of repetitive gameplay, expecially if you're a newbie.
I had a few interesting CW drops but usually, if you're not in a unit and you go solo and if you do not have a CW-optimized drop deck, the experience it's not so great (doing 400-500 damage with 4 mechs it's not so exciting for both you and your team).
I'm doing some CW drop only for the mech bays otherwise, right now, I prefer normal PUGs.

In normal drop usually the game mode is skirmish or assault: I think that we really need more variety in game modes. Good news that PGI is working on it, from what I've read.
I'd also suggest to have different mech classes: I made the mistake to start with an heavy (Cataphract, 70 ton) and buy a Marauder pack (75 ton). While I enjoy both mechs, they play in a very similar manner. Right now I have also a medium and a light and expecially the light it's very fun to play. More variety, more fun, at least for me.

Get into competitions, tournaments, and leagues. Will give you something to work towards, improve your play, and add more excitement.

PvP? whats the "long term motivation of counterstrike which hasn't actually changed since over 10 years?

It's just playing a PvP game shooting other gamers.

For the same reason i play any game that i have 1000's of hours playing.. I like the game play and find it fun..

There is nothing to gain by playing baldur's gate, mass effect, dragon age, Galactic Civ, Crusader kings II.. ext... So just like every game i play, it's for the fun.. and i find this game lots of fun.

Can't wait for the CW improvements, and the new single player down the road.. I just hope the game keeps going far past the 2020 rights contract..

This can be said for many other games...you get to max level and then you just do the dailies or such or and or...some games you can get free new what ever by having items drop...

Either you enjoy the game or not.

Besides grinding LP or CB for new mechs theres nothing to do. While CW with a Unit is fun, its completely meaningless. Capturing planets or losing them, just doesnt matter, besides getting LP.
Mwo is a fantastic game, and i'd like to immerse myself deeper into it, but just waiting for April 19 and CW Phase 3 seems just kinda dull.

So, what keeps you playing besides Grinding?

I'm having fun?

That's really all there is to it at this point.

This is the game I was promised, it isn't the game I hoped it be, but I'm having enough fun that I come back and play a fair amount.

Now if the competative scene started having cash prizes... then I'd play regularly because good light jocks are hard to find and I am pretty darn good at them.

I guess it's difficult for me to answer because I don't really see it as a grind, even after 9 months or so of nearly daily play.
I just really enjoy the challenge, I want to do better than the last match, enjoy mastering my mechs, working toward getting modules for all my mechs, achievements... and it really all boils down to the fact I just can't wait for the next drop because with 23 other live players out there every match is going to be different. So I don't get bored at all. Coupled with the simple fact that after all these years of gaming in general, this is the first one that I (well, modestly in at least my opinion) I am actually pretty decent at, and some day would like to be Good at it :)

*shrugs* Guess I just really enjoy it and find it fun to hang out with my lancemates and stomp around melting mechs.

I play for the shared war stories. I love being able to tell a tale of how I found a stationary Locust, or won three consecutive fights in a Hunchback IIC with no STs and only 2 CMPL for weapons against a Raven, a Mauler, and a Blackjack, or how I ran out of ammo and forced a draw with the last remaining enemy Stalker in my Jenner IIC on the new Caustic.

I love the fish-story embellishments, and even more when embellishment isn't required, because the game actually produces moments like that.

Battle doesnt need a purpose, battle is its own purpose.
You dont ask why a field burns , or a plague spreads.
Dont ask why I fight.

MTG reference. Classy.

How about:

"A fool knows no fear. A hero shows no fear."

why ask why?

we at the lance/star level don't know why or even get a say in why we fight in the same frozen waste or burned out city or lifeless moon, or volcano hell world, we go were we are told, we kill and die over the same useless piece of dirt that others have fought over before.

Why?

so the t-shirt shops have some good pics and sayings to put on t-shirts. and don't forget all the people depending on the bobble head sales....

that and a pay check.....

we are mercenaries....

we don't ask why, just how much you got to spend....

For those invested in battletech/Mechwarrior they will keep playing as it's the only game in town.

For new players this is the core retention issue. There is very little carrot to the stick.

I play for the customization. Seeing a frankenmonsterosity of a mech walking around, and mostly because I do enjoy playing the game, even if it gets repetitive, and when it does get too repetitive for me, or there is nothing new to strike my fancy, I will take a break, sometimes as long as 4 months, and then come back. Every now and then a weird build will pop into my head, and I'll construct the darn thing, and try it out, and try to make it work. I think I've invented my own version of the game for some builds (like my 4 flamer 4 MG Ember, where the goal is simply to cause as many enemy assaults to alpha me out of frustration, and rage, causing their death, and our lulzy victory)

Playing with a group definitely helps make the game a lot more fun, because every drop becomes it's own mini story, and hilarious game. I still remember the first time I saw a unit mate drop in a 12 flamer Nova. After we all (himself included) proceeded to laugh at how miserably he will do, he ended the match with 3 kills, and was an integral part of why we got a win, instead of a loss. Or when I talked my entire lance into jumping into Suimandos (3 SRM6 COM-2Ds, long before the dawn of Clans, or Oxides), and just run around like lunatics SRMing assaults into the nether realm.

I find having friends in a game, or some social aspect where you meet up on Teamspeak 3 to talk, chill, joke & have fun CAN sometimes even be more gravitating/addicting than even the game itself, as ironic as that might sound.

To be honest, this has kept me playing a few games far longer than I would have once I was past the "wow!, shiny!!" stage.

Pity MWO's social tools are more reminiscent of the 80's and 90's than a 21st century game.

You described all exactly. MWO is just grindfest without any purpose because PGI are really amateurs. This game has so many bugs and unfinished technical so called features that I would not dare to release it it this raw prealpha state. But as you can see many people are spending money for this ... the base idea of this game is excellent but the final solution is rubbish.
