Noice.

My perception (correct me if I'm wrong) is that you just have to have a very lucky match to get Ace of Spades, and that you could as easily get it in an ACH as a Stalker.

I've had several 7-kill matches, just never managed to get the lucky 8th. One day, hopefully.

My first Ace of Spades was in my Banshee 3E, and I have done Ace of Spades on a few other mechs including my XL Stalker.

It depends on what you are trying to do. You are putting 20's in a 10's launcher. So it will take longer to fire and you will still get the wider shot grouping. You are better off running a 3H if you want to do 20's to get the benefit of LRM20 quirks. Brawling with a Stalker, short of going with a sword and board build is going to cost you a torso very quickly and as an XL you are done. You'd have to be on a map where you can crest and hit targets at 270M reliably, not somethinjg I'd want to try with an XL.

The best way to get the high kill matches from my experience is in faster mechs with 6-8 lasers and - energy duration quirks.

The BJ-1X was a great candidate because of its engine rating boost, the DC still has the -duration though. I've gotten a few 6-7s with it while leveling it up. Past that a lot amounts to genuine luck of being in the right place at the right time.

the 1X is the only mech i'v gotten Ace of Spades with - and i somehow got lucky and did it twice last summer

I wouldn't even try it. Why not an XL Atlas w/ Gauss? Now there's a challenge.

Sure, you can play an XL stalker, if you go sit in a corner and never get shot at.

I'm all for bad builds, but, why.... Why would you do something that terrible? At least do a FUNNY terrible thing, like buying a Misery and sticking an MG in the ballistic slot.

I don't think I'd be convinced to run an XL Stalker.

A 300 STD vs a 300XL will save you 9.5 tons at the cost of 6 crits. The engine cap isn't high enough for an XL to offer a meaningful speed advantage, so it's just down to payload. On paper it looks pretty good, 34 tons of payload (with your engine DHS stuffed) vs 43.5 tons. It gets less favorable the smaller the engine, since the percent change in payload becomes much less meaningful (7.5 tons at 275, with 37.5 tons vs 45).

What can you do with those tons, though?

It doesn't help with heat sinks because you'll run out of crits before you run out of tons. So you're mounting heavier weapons, namely heavier energy and missile weapons. But if you aren't meaningfully increasing your dissipation, adding more weapons generally means you have more burst but no greater ability to sustain firing, in exchange for dramatically cutting your lifespan in a fight.

So it helps a mech that relies very heavily on cover and not taking hits to make use of its XL engine. Cover for cooling after a large alpha, or cover for using LRMs. Along with a team that can protect its flanks. That's a bit too situational for my tastes. I'd much rather run Endo with a STD 300 when I need more tons and make use of the mech's dead space.

Can we face the facts? Stalkers are infamous for their small frontal profile and high arms laden with energy hardpoints. Not their ability to launch LRMs. Mechs of any shape can Lurm.

If you want to show your prowess in a fragile Stalker and use it for its strengths, then you have to go direct-fire.

Put together your Direct-fire Loadouts that are enhanced by the weght savings of XL engines. Rock them. Roll with them. Then call me.

A lot actually. T1 isn't a super special exclusive epeen club. It's like hitting gold league in Starcraft. People could get to it in any mech, even crappy ones.

So it's certainly doable, would just be a bit more frustrating.
