Is there a way to insert and play music in MWO or am I limited to playing MP3s in the background? I searched through the forum but the answer seems to be NO.
Is it because licensing issue? It's funny because the first thing I usually do is turn off the music in my games because it breaks immersion for me. However, lately I've been itching to to play MWO while listening to Solaris.

I've never looked into modding anything for this game so I don't know, but if the sound files can be modified then the short answer would be yes.
In these cases though it's just always seemed easier to me to mute the in game music and play whatever I want to listen to

Waaaaay easier to just use MP3s or listenonrepeat.com than trying to attempt that.

the only game i ever remember having an audio player built right in was one of the unreal games. i kind of thought it was silly i could just load a playlist in winamp and use the mm controls on my keyboard to skip tracks and stuff. it was kind of novel but useless.

There's little point for game developers to write in an mp3 music player when there's already plenty of music players you can play in the background as you play your game.
I've just taken to having a browser open with my google music playing.

Aye. GTA VC and SA also had the ability to create a user radio staion with your own audio files, but a media player in that sense it was not....
As others have said, there are so many ways to listen to music these days that an ingame MP3 player is redundant at best, if not simply superfluous.

Someone with some talent needs to photoshop a metal band and replace the members with mechs....

While I do enjoy BOC, I much prefer Vader for this game.

I just pop open Youtube and play some katy perry, kesha, whatever as I wait for the match to start.
If you wanted to listen the whole match just turn the volume down.
