I have only been playing a few days, and am really enjoying myself. One question, why can I see a mech, but not lock onto him?

Under ECM or out of sensor range.....
or invisible walls (but this is usually on low graphic settings)

you have trouble detecting Mechs under ECM and your Mech has limited sensor range as p4r4c0n already said

your Mechs sensor range is usualy about 800m, but that can be extended with Command Console, Targeting computer, Active Probe and the sensor range module, increasing sensor range to a potential maximum of approximately 1300m.
