I own only 1 Clan mech, so it was easy to ignore it.

out of 67 IS mechs, 41 of them are usually run with an XL engine. So 41/67.

What I found interesting is that, of my "favorite" mechs, 3 are XL users and 3 are STD users. I primarily pilot Heavies and Mediums, most of which are (mostly) considered XL friendly. I do buck the trend a bit with my Centurions, of the 4 that I own, 3 of them routinely use an XL. Same with my Cataphracts, I own all of them and run an XL in half of them (3D, IM, 1X are XL, 2X, 4X and 0XP are STD).

Of my Assaults, only 2 of my Battlemasters use an XL. The Stalkers, Atlas, King Crab and Maulers are exclusively STD.

However, I have picked and chosen my 'Mechs carefully to do this. My mediums are Griffins and Ciccadas (and 1 Cent for nostalgia, my 1st 'Mech in MWO), my heavies are Marauders and my assaults are Battlemasters.

Short of lights and my Trebuchet, I don't use XLs in my mechs, since every one of my builds don't have the space for it. The only exception is my King Crab, but with how often I lose my torsos It's not something I'd consider.

I've got 17 mechs, 3 are medium, the rest are spread roughly evenly among weight classes. I don't own a single STD engine. simply can't stand the loss of firepower/protection/ammo/speed for a little extra durability

I'm not going to give you statistics against my entire garage, because some of them I don't touch, like, ever.

So, here's what I got, counting only the IS 'Mechs I do play regularly:

Lights: 8/9

COM-TDK, LCT-1V, LCT-1M, LCT-3S, LCT-3M, LCT-3V, LCT-PB, and FS9-A are all running XL.

LCT-1E is a STD 190 (shuddup, got tired of Streaks insta-gibbing!).

Mediums: 5/6

BJ-1, BJ-1DC, BJ-3, BJ-1X, and CN9-AH all run XL.

BJ-A runs STD 225.

Heavies: 14/17

RFL-3N, RFL-3C, RFL-5D, RFL-LK, MAD-3R, MAD-3R(S), MAD-5D, MAD-BH2, JM6-S, JM6-FB, CPLT-J, QKD-IV4, DRG-1C, and DRG-FLAME all run XL.

JM6-A, JM6-DD, and MAD-5M all run STD (295, 275, and 325, respectively)

Assault: 1/2

BLR-3M is XL 390.

AS7-S is STD 350.

16/17 lights running XL (the only one running STD is my stock UM-60)

17/17 mediums running XL (Blackjacks, Vindicators, Enforcers, Cicadas, Griffins, Wolverines)

9/12 heavies running XL (GHRs, QKDs, Jager, CTF, and TDR-9SE. Only my TDR-9S, -5SS, and -5S-T are STD)

1/2 assaults running XL (BNC-3M XL, BNC-3E STD)

I don't have a huge amount of IS mechs currently (15 or so), but mine would be as follows:

Lights: 100% XL
Mediums: 0% XL (I have HBKs, so...)
Heavies: 20% XL
Assaults: 0% XL (Stalkers and Highlanders)

I run less XL than most meta-minded people I'm sure, but I prefer roughly symmetrical builds (bad for shielding, good for popped st) and so I avoid XL on most mechs so that I can still throw out usually half my firepower even after getting a side removed. Any mech that is lopsided and wouldn't have much firepower remaining after a single st is off is probably better with an XL, though.

I also find that since so many run XLs, people often focus side torso which lets me kill them with my remaining firepower after they spend the time ripping my st off.

I presently have 69 'Mechs with XL engines, including 10 Clan XLs (4 of those being locked engines on Omnimechs). I have 26 'Mechs with STDs. That works out to ~73% XL engines, although I'm in the process of buying a set of Shadowcats, to be followed by a Clan heavy of some type, so the percentage of XLs will be increasing further.

All 33 of my lights have XLs.

26 out of 37 mediums have XLs.

8 out of 11 heavies have XLs.

2 out of 14 assaults have XLs.

Except when the application demands tankiness (Atlas, Hunchback, Crab, etc), I go XL because I find I usually get more value out of speed and firepower than a little more survivability.

(note; I've rounded to the nearest 5% for ease of use - and I've only counted the mechs I keep built-up, not the ones I keep stripped. I've got a tonne of mechs, but some, like my trebs for example, only got played the week they came out & have sat stripped ever since...)

My assaults might look overly high, but bear in mind I don't run a a lot of assaults, only a rAwrsome, two Victors, a trio of King Crabs, of which only the awesome uses a standard - so it's it's actually 83.3%, but yeah, rounding..
